You pretty much have to stick with the kernel releases supplied with the compatible L4T release (L4T is just Ubuntu plus NVIDIA drivers). See:

In the L4T R36.x, which is a developer preview and only valid on Orin (Xavier cannot use this) the software is switching over to mainline Linux kernels. There won’t be any support for this on Xavier.
