IMX412 sensor driver for Jetson Nano 32.2

Hi,

We are working on IMX412 sensor driver for Jetson Nano L4T 32.2, based on the IMX219 driver.
IMX412 is 12 Mpix color sensor 4056 x 3040.

  1. Do you support packed 10-bit raw format (4 pixels in 5 bytes), such as V4L2_PIX_FMT_SRGGB10P ?
    If so, what should be the tegra_video_format definition, for example:
static const struct tegra_video_format vi2_video_formats[] = {
. . . . .
        TEGRA_VF_RAW10,
        10,
        MEDIA_BUS_FMT_SRGGB10_1X10,
        ?????,    // instead of {2, 1},
        ?????,    // instead of T_R16_I
        TEGRA_IMAGE_DT_RAW10,
        V4L2_PIX_FMT_SRGGB10P,
        "RGRG.. GBGB..",
  1. Our driver captures OK one frame (start streaming, get 1 frame, stop streaming).
    When we start streaming and take multiple frames by v4l2-ctl, we observe the following problem:
    Each 4 frames begin with a valid frame, followed by 3 frames with zero data.
    Any idea what could be wrong ?

  2. At the moment we can’t get kernel trace info on Jetson Nano. The procedure, described in
    https://elinux.org/Jetson_TX2_Camera_BringUp
    does not work on Nano, some files are missing.

Greetings

hello plamenk,

  1. we don’t have reference sensor drivers with packed formats,
    you may also access Jetson Nano System-on-Module Data Sheet for supported input data formats.

  2. could you please share what’s the memory format you’re using, please also share the files about the issue.

  3. you cannot enable VI tracing messages since Nano did not support that.

Hi JerryChang,

Thank you for your help.

  1. Just yesterday we found the reason for our zero frames. We had initialized IMX412 sensor image size to 4056 x 3040 as suggested by the IMX412 datasheet. However Jetson Nano adjusts the specified width to the nearest multiple of 32, which is greater or equal to 4056 (4064). As a result we had mismatch between the image size, produced by the sensor, and what expected Nano.

hello plamenk,

FYI,
there’s Nano hardware limitation of the frame stride should be multiple of 64.
could you please modify the frame width as 4032 for implementation.
thanks

Hi JerryChang,

Image width of 4032 seems to work, so far no problems.

Hi JerryChang,

Streaming seems OK when we use v4l2-ctl:

v4l2-ctl -d /dev/video0 --set-fmt-video=width=4032,height=3040,pixelformat=RG10 --stream-mmap --stream-count=10 --stream-to=test1.raw
<<<<<<<<<<

But the GStreamer aborts with error:

How could we use GStreamer to show live camera stream ?
Thanks

hello plamenk,

there’s “No cameras available” error message pop-up, which indicate some erroneous while register camera device.
you might double check the device tree settings, suggest you check Camera Modules and the Device Tree session.
could you please also share the kernel messages for reference,
for example,

$ dmesg > klog.txt

hello plamenk,

v4l2 standard controls usually the simplest approach to validate sensor functionality.
however, getting camera sensor streaming through nvarguscamerasrc often a bit challenge.

several suggestion as below for your verification,

  1. you might access Sensor Software Driver Programming Guide to review the [Sensor Pixel Clock] settings.
  2. did the sensor streaming embedded with metadata? you should also have correct settings to report the embedded_metadata_height in the device tree property.
  3. please also check the Debugging Tips session to examine the drivers.
  4. please share both syslog and dmesg if you still facing the same failure.

Hi JerryChang,

Thanks for your help, especially looking in syslog was very helpful.
We advanced one step forward and now the message “execute:521 No cameras available” no longer appears.
The GStreamer pipeline starts but no window is opened.

syslog:

hello plamenk,

what’s the display monitor you had connected? you may also note that your sensor resolution is 4032x4030.
you’ll need to downscale image or ensure the monitor is able to rendering the preview frame.
here’s an alternative way to save the capture frame as jpeg file, please also have a try as below.
thanks

$ gst-launch-1.0 nvarguscamerasrc num-buffers=1 ! 'video/x-raw(memory:NVMM), width=4032, height=3040' ! nvjpegenc ! filesink location=sample.jpg

Hi JerryChang,

The monitor is 1280x800, but I expected that this GST pipeline will scale the picture to fit inside:

gst-launch-1.0 nvarguscamerasrc ! 'video/x-raw(memory:NVMM),width=4032,height=3040,framerate=10/1,format=NV12' !\
nvvidconv flip-method=0 ! 'video/x-raw,width=1008, height=760' ! nvvidconv ! nvegltransform ! nveglglessink -e

The next pipeline produces JPEG file with zero size:

gst-launch-1.0 nvarguscamerasrc num-buffers=1 ! 'video/x-raw(memory:NVMM), width=4032, height=3040' ! nvjpegenc ! filesink location=sample.jpg

At the moment our camera produces 10 FPS (shown by V4l2-ctl). We expected 20 FPS, which is the speed of the sensor on Raspberry PI 3B+.

Greetings

hello plamenk,

your GST report incorrect frame-rate here, you might review your device tree configuration.

GST_ARGUS: Running with following settings:
   Camera index = 0
   Camera mode  = 0
   Output Stream W = 4032 H = 3040
   seconds to Run    = 0
   Frame Rate = 0.000300

since it takes sensor pixel clock to calculate the exposure and also frame rate settings,
suggest you access Sensor Software Driver Programming Guide, please check [Sensor Pixel Clock] session and review your pixel clock settings.

you might also check Debugging Tips session and review your driver implementation.
thanks

Hi JerryChang,

Thanks for the help.
I thought the topic should be closed, but recently we received similar errors from 3 other sensor drivers on Nano 32.2:
IMX296, 1440x1080, 1 lane, 10-bit data, 60 FPS
IMX297, 720x540 (actual size 704x540), 1 lane, 10-bit data, 120 FPS
IMX327C, 1920x1080, 2 lanes, 10-bit data, 60 FPS
All 3 sensors capture mixed good/bad frames:
1 OK, 3 zero, 1 OK, 3 zero, …

The sensors have frame stride, multiple of 64 bytes, seems this is not the case of IMX412, described above.
The streaming stops with error:

video4linux video0: tegra_channel_capture_done: MW_ACK_DONE syncpoint time out! i=0
   video4linux video0: tegra_channel_capture_error(): index=0: TEGRA_VI_CSI_ERROR_STATUS 0x0000000a (or 0x00000008)

Here is fragment from the IMX327C device tree:

mode0 { // IMX327C_MODE_1920X1080,  60 FPS
        mclk_khz = "24000";
        num_lanes = "2";
        tegra_sinterface = "serial_a";
        phy_mode = "DPHY";
        discontinuous_clk = "no"; // tested with "yes" - no effect
        dpcm_enable = "false";
        cil_settletime = "0";

        active_w = "1920";
        active_h = "1080";
        pixel_t = "bayer_rggb";
        csi_pixel_bit_depth = "10";

        line_length = "2048";
        mclk_multiplier = "9.33";
        pix_clk_hz = "124416000";    // 1920 * 1080 * 60
        . . . .
        embedded_metadata_height = "0";
     };

    tcp: tegra-camera-platform {
        compatible = "nvidia, tegra-camera-platform";
        num_csi_lanes = <2>;
        max_lane_speed = <1500000>;
        min_bits_per_pixel = <10>;
        vi_peak_byte_per_pixel = <2>;
        vi_bw_margin_pct = <25>;
        max_pixel_rate = <240000>;
        isp_peak_byte_per_pixel = <5>;
        isp_bw_margin_pct = <25>;
        . . . .
     };

Any idea what could be wrong ?
Thanks

hello plamenk,

pix_clk_hz should be the total number of pixels the sensor used to generate an output size.
I would suggest you start from checking with sensor pixel clock,
you might also refer to Sensor Pixel Clock session to examine your DT property settings.
thanks

pix_clk_hz = "124416000";    // 1920 * 1080 * 60

Thanks JerryChang,

One thing is not clear to me. The document suggests 3 methods for calculation of the pixel clock, which seem to produce different results. Which one should be chosen, or I should try the 3 methods ?

hello plamenk,

sensor pixel clock is used for calculating exposure time, frame rate…etc
those three different methods should result similar results.
you might also refer to sensor specification and check the signaling configuration for calculations.
suggest you may also contact with your sensor vendor to ensure the detail configurations.
thanks

Hi JerryChang,

We tested the IMX327C driver with various values of pix_clk_hz:

pix_clk_hz = "129420300";     // IMX327C: Total number of pixels:     1945 * 1109 * 60
    pix_clk_hz = "128019900";     // IMX327C: Number of effective pixels: 1945 * 1097 * 60
    pix_clk_hz = "127493340";     // IMX327C: Number of active pixels:    1937 * 1097 * 60

Nothing changed. I have the feeling that this and some other parameters are ignored.
For example, we have tested:

line_length = "0";
    pix_clk_hz = "0";

and nothing changed.

Maybe we should port the drivers to Jetson TX2 for better system tracing ?
How do you think ?

hello plamenk,

I’ve notice that the number of active pixels of IMX327C is present in odd numbers.
since VI engine did not support such resolutions in odd numbers, could you please slightly crop one pixel for verification.
you may adjust active_w and active_h properties in device tree for testing.
thanks

Hi JerryChang,

We have stored the IMX327C sensor output into a raw file. It seems to be 1920 x 1080 (also shown by the crop registers of the sensor).
But maybe there is difference between the actual sensor frame size and what is expected.
Is there a place in the code, where we could dump the actual frame width and height, received from the sensor ?
