installing 2.1 driver on ubuntu 8.04 in vmware

Hello!

I am installing 2.1 driver 180.06 on ubuntu 8.04 in vmware. But while compling the kernel, it failed and I checked the log, whic goes like this:

ERROR: Unable to load the kernel module ‘nvidia.ko’. This happens most

   frequently when this kernel module was built against the wrong or

   improperly configured kernel sources, with a version of gcc that differs

   from the one used to build the target kernel, or if a driver such as

   rivafb/nvidiafb is present and prevents the NVIDIA kernel module from

   obtaining ownership of the NVIDIA graphics device(s), or NVIDIA GPU

   installed in this system is not supported by this NVIDIA Linux graphics

   driver release.

My gcc version is 4.2.4.

btw, I install it in the mode init 1, because I simply cannot change to init 3 or 4 mode in vmware, does any one can help me?

It will not work within VMWARE. The hardware UBUNTU ‘sees’ is not NVIDIA hardware.
