Jetson Orin Nano Developer Kit – Black Screen and Fan Stops After Boot (JetPack 5.1.3)

Hi everyone,

I’m running into an issue booting my Jetson Orin Nano Developer Kit, and I’d appreciate any help troubleshooting.

Hardware Setup:

  • Jetson Orin Nano Developer Kit
  • 5V 4A power supply (barrel jack)
  • SanDisk 64GB UHS-I microSD card
  • HDMI monitor
  • USB keyboard and mouse

What I Did:

  1. Downloaded the official JetPack 5.1.3 SD card image from the NVIDIA website.
  2. Flashed it to a new microSD card using Balena Etcher (flashing completed successfully).
  3. Inserted the SD card into the Jetson, connected HDMI, power, and keyboard/mouse.

What Happens:

  • On boot, the NVIDIA logo briefly appears on screen.
  • After a few seconds, the screen goes black, and the fan stops spinning.
  • The power LED stays on, but there’s no further display or activity.

What I Tried:

  • Reflashed the same image to confirm no corruption.
  • Used a second microSD card – same behaviour.
  • Tried a different HDMI cable and monitor – no change.
  • Booted with just power and HDMI (no USB peripherals) – same result.
  • Power supply barrel jack adapter from the box – should meet specs.

Summary:

  • Board starts to boot but fails shortly after.
  • Fan cuts off and screen goes dark.
  • Seems like a crash or power-related shutdown.

Has anyone seen this behaviour with JetPack 5.1.3 or the Orin Nano Dev Kit?

Would it make sense to try JetPack 5.1.2 or attempt recovery using SDK Manager?

Our Orin nano dev kit dont have hdmi port, but DP instead.
Do you use the custom board?

Is this still an issue to support? Any result can be shared?

It seemed to be a power issue. I worked around it by using the SDK Manager and 1TB NVMe SSD storage instead of an SD card. I repurposed my old laptop and installed Ubuntu 22.04 on it specifically for this setup.
