Jetson TK1 R21.5 and 7" HDMI display... why not?

Hi all,

is it possible that an amazing embedded board like the Jetson TK1 cannot handle correctly a HDMI 7" touchscreen with a resolution of 1024x600 pixels?

I read a lot of topics about this problem, but no working solution.

The HDMI LCD works like a charm with other embedded ARM boards: Jetson TX1, Rpi3, BeagleBone Black… but not with the Jetson TK1.

Is anyone facing the same issue with displays with a resolution lesser than 1920x1280?

Hi Myzhar,

What error message did you get?? Could you paste the kernel message?

Hello Wayne,

what kind of kernel message do you needd? /var/log/Xorg.0.log is enough?

Note that the first time I get, then if I disconnect and reconnect HDMI I get correct resolution 1024x600 (but this is a problem that we can solve disabling EDID and setting correct values in xorg.xonf)

PS Now I can write it: also TX2 can correctly detect the display

According to the mode selection in kernel driver, the mode available is decided by EDID.

Seems TX1 already solved this issue so that you can work fine on it.

I need to check the difference between r21.5 and r24.2 kernel. Sorry for keep you waiting.

Thank for your time Wayne.
If you can solve the problem for the TK1 it is a great thing

Thank for your time Wayne.
If you can solve the problem for the TK1 it is a great thing.

The little issue with TX1 is a power issue. If I connect the touch cable to USB3 connector the LCD is detected correctly, so I think that a powered hub can solve it.

What is the exact problem on TK1? Does your screen show but incorrect resolution? Or Is it totally not shown??
If it is not shown, please paste the result of “dmesg”.

Totally not shown… here it is the output of dmesg:

With no device detected, does this device not support EDID? HDMI should, but there may be adapters between small screens like this and HDMI which did not bother to include EDID (you’d have to program that for each specific model of screen any such adapter is added to)

Hi linuxdev,
This is the strange thing. Do you mean that I must deactivate edid and add configuration to xorg.conf?
I have tried, without success.

But why do the TX1 and TX2 correctly detect the screen?

EDID automatically configures xorg.conf based on live query data (the information is in RAM, so the file won’t show this). EDID is why you would not need to configure xorg.conf. If you lack EDID, then you must manually configure xorg.conf (or get lucky). The question is whether EDID should exist and fails, or if this HDMI adapter to the screen simply has not had EDID set up.

Note that just because a monitor works on a system it does not mean the monitor was correctly detected. It just means a mode was run by default which happens to be readable by the screen. Different versions of hardware and software may default to different resolutions and work or fail differently depending on circumstances.

If X is running with a login (environment variable “DISPLAY” is set) then what X thinks is there can be found with “xrandr”. If X is not running with a login, then you can still query EDID (it’s an i2c protocol) via packages “read-edid” and “edid-decode”. Here are two such queries to find out if EDID is showing up:

sudo get-edid | parse-edid
sudo get-edid | edid-decode

Ok… there is no edid on Jetson TX1:

But it works… and with the correct resolution (1024x600) and correct frequency

ubuntu@tegra-ubuntu:~$ xrandr -q -d :0
Screen 0: minimum 8 x 8, current 1024 x 600, maximum 16384 x 16384

I can get edid and more info using xrandr with verbose

ubuntu@tegra-ubuntu:~$ xrandr -q -d :0 --verbose

So here you have found a discrepancy between what xrandr says and get-edid (looks like you found a bug). To recap, note that your xrandr gave EDID data. Formatted, this is it:

00 ff ff ff ff ff ff 00 04 81 04 00 01 00 00 00
01 11 01 03 80 0f 0a 00 0a 00 00 00 00 00 00 00

00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 9f

If you copy and paste this into http://www.edidreader.com you’ll find this EDID data is valid. However, at edidreader.com, note that under “Timing Bitmap” the “standard” modes which most graphics software supports without needing EDID that none of those modes are supported by this monitor…which means without EDID there are no valid fallback modes. You have EDID, so it should work, but no standard modes will succeed. It isn’t until you get to “Descriptor 1” that you see 1024x600 as the only mode supported by that monitor.

There was another thread regarding a similar test case on EDID where valid EDID was found but video failed to configure for this. See:

https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topic/985264/jetson-tx1/black-consoles-on-l4t-64-bits-r24-rev-2-1/1

This other thread was for JTX1, but I think you ran into the same issue under JTK1. I have not heard back on a resolution to the issue. This is a case of EDID being available, but parsing or using the EDID has failed.

I hope they find a solution. It is really awful that amazing embedded boards like Jetsons have problems with LCD displays made for embedded applications.
As far as I know there is not a list of 5", 7" or 10" LCD display with a resolution lower than 720p that work correctly with Jetsons.

I’m going to connect the display to my laptop to see if it can read the edid using get-edit…

You can manually configure xorg.conf based on the EDID data (parse it with http://www.edidreader.com). There’s a significant learning curve to manual config of xorg.conf though…basically you’d be creating a monitor section and going through the different key/value pair definitions and adding them in manually with an editor. Should you get enough of it in place the screen should work in its single valid mode.

Before opening this thread I tried to modify the xorg.conf on Jetson TK1, without success. This is why I’m trying to understand why on TX1 and on TX2 it works without modifications and on TK1 it does not.

There is an unknown bug somewhere which causes some EDID data to fail. I do not know where that bug is, but configuring successfully involves the i2c software, the Xorg software (at least under 3.x kernels), the kernel, and communications between Xorg software and kernel. This also differs in console mode which may involve VESA framebuffers and BIOS or UEFI modes.

It is questionable whether it really works on the TX1 or if you just got lucky (there are a number of ways to verify EDID and that it is actually EDID being used if you are interested in the effort…but it won’t change anything to know). On the TX2 there are differences in its kernel versus the 3.x kernel of TK1/TX1 which may simplify things and remove some of the possible sources of errors (a bug could have simply gone away because of removing code from Xorg and putting refactored code into the kernel for mode setting).
