Multiple monitor setup - power off one of the monitors and the other forgets rotation settomgs?

I have some new workstations (Windows 11, latest nvidia driver) with 2x T400 that drive 5x 27" monitors. The 5th monitor is rotated (portrait flipped). Some of our users don’t care for all the monitors and turn one of them off; when they do this, the 5th monitor reverts to a landscape orientation. With all of the monitors powered on it returns to the correct orientation.

Is there a setting in Windows 11 or the NVIDIA Control Panel to help with this? Sorry if this isn’t the correct board for this post.

Thanks.

Hi there @david27590 and welcome to the NVIDIA developer forums.

It might not be the correct forum, but I wouldn’t be able to recommend a better one beside the GeForce or generic stackoverflow or similar forums.

But I think there is an easy fix. Windows 11 stores multi-monitor configurations on a “connected device” basis. That means for example if you switch off an DisplayPort monitor, most of the times Windows will still see it in its device list and keep the configuration. But if you disconnect an HDMI monitor, it will not see it anymore and revert to whatever setup you had without that monitor.

So in your situation you would need to set the portrait monitor to portrait again once the unused monitor has been switched off. After that Windows should remember this and switch between configurations, if you set this in the Windows settings.

Word of warning, this only holds if you always switch off the same monitor. Otherwise it is a different device and the outcome is undefined again.

And no guarantees, Windows multi-monitor configuration can sometimes be rather non-deterministic and especially physically disconnecting and re-connecting monitors can upset any balance you might have found.

Sadly all of this is controlled by the Windows Display Manager subsystem, not by the NVIDIA driver.

Good luck.

Thank you, Markus, appreciate the reply. I think we’re reaching the saturation point with monitors, half of our users are happy with the 5th 27" screen, but the other half turn it off. Thankfully I shouldn’t have to worry about more than 2 configurations.
