No 4k output over HDMI on a GTX 1050TI

Hello. I use nvidia driver 415.25 instaled from ppa:graphics-drivers/ppa on my ubuntu 18.04.1 fresh install. My laptop is a MSI GL73 8RD-406FR with an GTX 1050Ti.
When I connect an 4K screen ( I also tried other 2K screen ) with the displayPort, everything works fine.
But when I use the HDMI port, the maximum resolution allowed is 1080p.

This is what xrandr return.
Note that eDP-1-1 is connect to laptop screen.
Also that DP-1-1 and HDMI-1-2 are connected to 2 screen that are the same and are 2560x1440 native.

The HDMI port is connected to the intel gpu (UHD630) which only supports HDMI 1.4, so no 4k@60Hz. You might want to check if you can add a custom modeline for 4k@30Hz if your monitor supports that.

I already tried that. With 2 configurations, 2560*1440 @60Hz and @59.95Hz.

Note that under windows, everything works. So it is not an hardware limitation.

Still a bit odd why that mode isn’t picked up automatically since it obviously works. Maybe some bug in either Xserver, modesetting driver or i915 kernel driver. Have an eye on it once you get the update to Xserver 1.20.

I still have a problem with my GTX 770 not supporting 144Hz that my monitor can do, and I reported this thing along time ago.
My problem might be the same as you had, somehow strange modeline that would work, but I really don’t know. :(

r3pek, Kepler gpus only support 1440p@120Hz or 1080p@144Hz, it’s a hardware limitation, so no dice.

Last time i checked, there wasn’t an option to 144 on the 1080p resolution either, but i’ll ping you in 30 minutes ;)

There’s no 1080p@144Hz.
If you know/think/suspect that your monitor can use that, use in xorg.conf

Option "ModeValidation" "AllowNonEdidModes"

and use cvt to generate a modeline for it.
Don’t blame me if your monitor blows up.

Out of curiosity, and since I hijacked the thread already, what exactly limits the 1440p@144 on this card?

Probably the speed of the DAC/display engine, only capable of displaying a specific number of scanlines per second.
