No longer able to get HDMI port working

Hello!

I have two Jetson nanos, both were working without any problems but one of them seems to have stopped working. I took the working monitor (via HDMI), usb devices, ethernet, external 5V 4A supply (and I connected the jumper on J48), even put in the same SD card from the working nano. Basically, it’s the same exact hardware. It works just fine on one nano and it’s not working at all on another nano.

I guess this is a fairly common issue as a coworker of mine had a similar issue. The green light comes up just fine (so it’s not a blown power section, which is really good news!) and I was actually able to connect to the nano via putty so it looks like it’s booting ok just fine. Something seems to have stopped working with the hdmi out though.

Any idea what the issue might be or how to get this working again? Let me know if you need me to run any other tests to see if we can get this up and working again. Thanks!

I have this issue with my nano and one TV, but it works fine with my monitor. The HDMI port seems to be pretty picky about what it talks to. I get the “error during i2c read probe (-121)” as well. Somtimes unplugging it and replugging fixes it. Also, try unplugging any USB devices. One time I had a keyboard that was drawing too much power and that stopped the HDMI port from working. Was about to RMA it too.

Yeah, the whole thing is a bit odd because I have another working nano right next to me with the same everything and it works fine (and, to be fair, this one used to work fine). As I mentioned in a previous post, it’s the same monitor/hdmi setup, SD card, usb device/peripherals, ethernet connection, etc. One device boots up and the other doesn’t. I’m guessing the answer is in that log somewhere but I don’t know what I’m looking at/looking for. Hoping someone at nVidia will pop in here and shed some light (or at least let me know where to look).

If there’s a chip that could be blown, we could swap it out (in case there was some sort of ESD event). Alternatively, we could just RMA it, I guess, just hoping to make it easier for them and quicker for us. It is a bit concerning though, doesn’t seem like a particularly robust board at this point.

Eh. Every board has it’s issues. It’s rediculously hard to find good power supplies for Raspberry Pis, for example. I would RMA it if you swap everything with another board and it still has problems. My issues were power related but yours sound like it could be something else.

Actually the i2c message is probably related to the camera not plugged in, and not an error, now that I look at it’s source. If you unplug and replug your monitor, does dmesg spit out anything new?

Based on this, the main differences I see are the I2c read probe fail on the bad board, and the difference in vdd-core voltage. I’m not sure what to do with this information.

Hmm. I guess this isn’t exactly a 1:1 comparison as I do have some additional circuitry hooked up to one of them . . . but that’s the one that’s passing. I can’t imagine one board having more things attached to it makes it work while the one with nothing attached (even a camera) is having problems. But it could explain the difference in the i2c read potentially. Could also explain the core voltage difference, maybe?

What’s interesting is the bad board DOES recognize that the HDMI cable is detected. Just doesn’t seem to be able to send the video?

In the future, you might find it easier to use the “diff” command.

Would seem related to the camera, but it’s odd it stands out. Do your nanos have the same board revisions? it seems the “bad” nano may be an earlier version of the board (on some earlier revisions the MAC address on eth0 was the same, so it gets reset on boot).

Can you run this python script on both boards and post what spits out?

If they’re different revisions, you might try changing some other things, like another power supply. Otherwise it seems like there is a hardware issue and you should just RMA it.

Sorry for late reply. Actually, the log you have here is not the full boot up log because we put a “quiet” keyword in extlinux.conf so that it would put most verbose log in silence.

If you want to show more log, please go to Linux_for_Tegra/rootfs/boot/extlinux/extlinux.conf and remove the quiet. After re-flash, you shall see the log of display driver coming out.
