No VGA Output, Dual Monitor, Lenovo W520

I have a Lenovo W520. It has a VGA and Display port as visual outputs.

To get the NVIDIA drivers to work I had to patch the kernel from : this website if-not-true-then-false

“inttf NVIDIA 340.108 Patcher for Kernel”

This was successful and now I have a large display for the display port. The VGA remain not detected as in disconnected.

In the bios, which I entered during bootup by hit “F1” I went to “Config/Display” and changed Graphics Device to “NVIDIA Optimus”. I disabled OS detection for NVIDIA Optimus.

VERY IMPORTANT: I noticed that the second “VGA” card. The Intel does not show up in lspci when the setting the bios is not set to “NVIDIA Optimus” or Discrete Graphics.

I got the external Dispplayport to work with a custom xorg.conf . This is the same file I am using currently.

I have a know working monitor Acer CB281HK tested with a different Debian computer attached via HDMI. The Lenovo W520 laptop with the VGA not activated when connected. This connection is a new cable VGA to Displayport. I assume the cable could be at fault. I have another computer to test. Will try this. Second I could get a VGA to HDMI cable and see if that makes a difference. The information here is how the computer boots up.

Super interesting. I changed the cable to a VGA to HDMI and I got the Acer monitor to display. Looks like the cable was the issue. When I booted up none of the screen had a login prompt I could see. I had to do it from memory. Once logged in I was able to use the largest screen as I usually do. Will try to configure and see I can get things better.

] SOLVED SOLUTION [

Thanks for the help. It works now. I got the Acer monitor connected via a VGA to HDMI cable. I purchased a new cable. The previous cable was Displayport to VGA this is why the monitor was not detected. If that cable was VGA to Displayport it would have worked. This is tricky because you can get a cable that have the correct connections on both ends. This does not mean it is bidirectional. That was my fault.

Within the Nvidia application I set the larger monitor to be the primary and that automatically set the smaller Acer to be the extended desktop.
