NVidia Jetson TX2 + Oculus Rift DK2. Nvidia driver doesn't get screen resolution

Hello! I’m trying to connect Oculus Rift DK2 to Jetson TX2 through HDMI-0, but unfortunately it appears in two strange modes:

I have played with xrandr, tried to add new mode, but it have excepted with an error:

X Error of failed request:  BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)
  Major opcode of failed request:  140 (RANDR)
  Minor opcode of failed request:  18 (RRAddOutputMode)
  Serial number of failed request:  20
  Current serial number in output stream:  21

I’ve tried to change xgamma, there weren’t any results. I tried to edit EDID, and disable extensions flag (http://analogbit.com/2008/07/02/fixing-dvi-hdmi-displays-due-to-edid-bugs-on-nvidia/)

I’ve tried to use another nvidia driver (downgrade to 27.1.0 from last 28.1.0)

My system: I use last JetPack 3.1 (OS ver. 28.0.1), Ubuntu 16.04

I know nothing about the Rift, but probably the first thing you’d want to do is get verbose xorg.0.log messages to see why the driver is rejecting modes (beyond the fact that the modes were rejected). Add this to xorg.conf, section “Device”:

Our X does not accept a mode that is not from EDID. As a result, any mode added by userspace command would be rejected.

I’ve tried to use custom EDID (with option “CustomEDID”), change mode, but it was rejected.

Oculus Rift DK2 says that, 1080x1920 rotated left mode is preferred. But I can’t understand why screen in this mode shifted and appear with wrong colors? https://ibb.co/mwKJ6G

You might run glxinfo and xdpyinfo and look for visuals, then compare to the Rift’s supported visuals (it’s a lot of information, but basically you’ll only look at color depths and how colors are arranged). If there is a difference between the format of how color is sent from the Jetson, versus what the Rift expects in that particular mode, then it might work with altered color.

Separately: The TX2 does not have nearly as much GPU power as a GTX 970 graphics card, which is the recommended minimum for VR apps.
I’m not saying it’s impossible to make something work; I’m just calling this out so that you’re aware.

I’m not mind to rebuild kernel and fix this problem, but even my normal monitor (ASUS) don’t work properly as well:

tegra-i2c 3190000.i2c: rx dma timeout
tegra-i2c 3190000.i2c: i2c transfer timed out addr: 0x50

And behaves very strange: can’t find edid, run in 600x800 mode, send above messages, then display connection disappear and suddenly recovers (after 5 mins) in 1280x720 mode. I only restart lightdm and now can work.

and they didn’t solved it.

By the way, when I reflash Jetson to 28.1, my monitor recognize all modes and works perfect in 1920x1080 mode. Then I apt-get upgrade system, reboot and get this troubles with display detection, i2c and hdmi recognition.

What can influence on this? Upgrade of xorg? Kernel problems or EDID?

Actually, not “apt-get upgrade system”, just “apt-get update && apt-get upgrade” after flashing 28.1.

After the “apt-get upgrade” run “sha1sum -c /etc/nv_tegra_release” to be sure libglx.so was not overwritten.

FYI, the i2c communication is used to read monitor data which produces the edid file in “/sys”. No i2c, no edid. If your cable has any older 15-pin VGA component it won’t work…VGA did not have this wire. Some DVI adapters are also only analog and so don’t include this wire, but most DVI does include this. So cables will change whether edid exists. Be sure to check cable pins.

I’m trying add rules to udev, and my Oculus recognized by OS, but unfortunately, I still have problems with screen resolution and color.

If this is a standard HDMI connector going to the Jetson dev board’s HDMI connector, and if EDID is enabled, it should select whatever is valid for the combination of driver and monitor. The URL you gave earlier on editing EDID was from the year 2008…it is at least 9 years out of date, so I would not pay any attention to it.

I also would not disable EDID…use it with its default configuration and see what happens. Add this option to the “Device” section of “/etc/X11/xorg.conf” to get full debug comments on mode settings:

That is not supported by the Jetson GPU driver.
If that’s needed, then you are short on luck.

Again, not supported by the Jetson GPU driver. The Jetson GPU driver just picks one of the modes displayed in the EDID, and doesn’t allow you to customize it.

Any recommendations?
Or may be you have any thoughts why when I connect Oculus Rift DK2, display colorspace have the wrong order: R->B, G->R, B->G ?
How can I set colorspace order? And how can I check if the driver support my display through HDMI or SPI?

For whatever reason the web URL for the pastebin with logs does not work for me (you could hit the “code” icon while posting, looks like “</>”, and paste the log into that)…it just hangs. Those logs (with Option “ModeDebug”) are what the driver is saying about modes.

Change the resolution through xrandr should work. What command did you use?
