I have a KVM based VM (under Openstack) that is using PCI-passthropugh to access 3 RTX A5000 GPUs. The gpus are visible to the VM using lspci.
The installer builds the nvidia drivers but fails when attempting to load them. Dmesg reports:
nvidia_modeset: Unknown symbol acpi_video_backlight_use_native (err -2)
I suspect something in the installer is not detecting correctly and attempting to use an expected, but non-existant builtin or other module functions. Any assistance would be appreciated.
Relevant details:
OS: Fedora 36 with all updates
Kernel: 6.1.5-100.fc36.x86_64
Driver: 525.60.11 and 525.78.01 (both tested, same result)
NOTE: The virtualization stack is functional wrt pci-passthrough as a Fedora34 based VM (kernel 5.17.12-100 , driver: 510.68.02) works ok.

I know fixing the config detection would be the correct fix, but for expediency, I patched the driver to remove the problematic call:

I then applied it to the installer with the --apply-patch parameter.
So far its working.

acpi_video_backlight_use_native
is a function in the ACPI Video Driver. Loading the video
kernel module which contains this driver should fix it.

I’m getting the same behaviour as OP and wondering whether there is a better solution available? This seems to be a runtime error and if the backlight were disabled altogether on module load it could perhaps be avoided. Does anyone know how to do this? I saw a reference to something similar here but not evident whether this is still a valid option on newer drivers and how to implement.
In my case everything works fine on AWS provisioned g5.xlarge with M60 GPU running Fedora CoreOs up until 6.0.x running driver 515.86.01. However, the 6.1.x kernels all fail with the OP’s error whether running 510.108.03 / 515.86.01 / 525.85.12.
OK, so I think I now get what @pkoetsier is saying now and I can confirm that if I execute modprobe video
to load this kernel module then all is good on 6.1.x kernels when subsequent NVIDIA kernel modules are loaded.
I’m really out of my depth when it comes to kernel modules frankly and so I can’t comment on whether this is a good or bad thing. I can see that this is not a regression in module loading from 6.0.x to 6.1.x, i.e. the 6.0.x kernels that work fine do not show video
loaded at all (lsmod | grep video
) although it does exist as a kernel module and you can manually load it. As such this seems to be a new dependency on at least Fedora kernels which do not seem to load video
by default (can’t comment on other distributions). It seems bizarre that there is not some dependency mechanism to autoload video
now that it has become a new dependency for NVIDIA modules but perhaps that is bad/undesired somehow.
In any case I will automate loading the module in my provisioning and the sun will shine again.
I would still like to know if there is a way to disable this altogether via setting variables when loading nvidia-modeset
