Orbitty Carrier + Jetson TX1 and headset USB

I just installed my TX1 Module on my brand new Orbitty Carrier. I’m trying to use a headset with it through the following method:

-My headset is wired and have a p2 for mic and another for phones
-I’m plugging them in a Vention USB 3.0 HUB with Audio Adapter: https://www.vention.cn/product/3-ports-usb3-0-hub-audio-adapter/
-The hub is being attached straight into Orbitty’s usb 3.0 port.

However, I’m not getting any audio output from Orbitty nor it’s receiving audio from my mic. It was working normally when my TX1 was installed on nvidia devkit board, but it is not working now.

Could you guys walk me through possible steps to make it work?

I won’t be able to help with all of it, but the most common issue for going from one carrier to another is failing to use the correct device tree (part of each vendor’s board support package). Perhaps second to that is using a different kernel config and not sticking with the correct initial config.

First, make sure the device is detect on USB (verify USB works). Monitor “dmesg --follow” and see what shows up as you plug in the device. What shows up?

Check your “lsusb” prior to plugging in the USB plug. Now plug in the USB plug and check “lsusb” again…does a new entry show up? What is the entry?

If you know that is working, then you can go forward with checking if your kernel features are correct.

Looks like it is recognizing some sort of audio device from USB HUB when I plug it in.

My dmesg shows the following lines when I connect the hub to the USB port:

[ 95.028782] usb 1-3: new high-speed USB device number 3 using xhci-tegra

Lines 11 to 14 should be hub’s built in audio device. I’ll post full dmesg at the end of this post.
My lsusb does show both audio device and hub itself too in at lines 3 and 4:

Bus 002 Device 002: ID 0955:09ff NVidia Corp.
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub

Bus 001 Device 005: ID 1a40:0101 Terminus Technology Inc. Hub
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub

I noticed a weird thing when I try to open alsamixer, it shows me “cannot open mixer: No such device”. When I check my sound preferences, there is only one device which is Analog Output, both “tegra-snd-t210ref-mobile-rt565x”.

Edit: I tried to use an USB heaset and it doesn’t work too. Even when I plugged it directly into USB port.

Any ideas?

Thank you for your help!

The vendor/product IDs show as “Audio Adapter (Unitek Y-247A)” (idVendor=0d8c, idProduct=0014).

I happen to have a USB headset from this vendor, although the product differs. My experience with that vendor is that the products typically do work in Linux, but that documentation in English can be hard to find. When you see the IDs, but the device doesn’t exist, it implies USB has done its job and announced the device, but no driver has taken ownership. Unfortunately, I do not know which driver that particular device uses, although it would be the same driver regardless of being a desktop PC or a Jetson.

I did see this which was interesting:
https://forum.manjaro.org/t/solved-usb-headset-microphone-cant-get-working/47809

That URL talks about reinstalling pulseaudio, but I suspect that won’t work in this case (however, it could, and likely would only reset certain configurations). Typically you would list packages with “dpkg -l”, and search for something in a manner such as “dpkg -l | grep -i ‘pulse’”. As an example, a reinstall might be “sudo apt-get install --reinstall pulseaudio”. If it doesn’t work, then no harm done.

I found this on the device, but I’m not sure if this is your specific device (the chipset would be the same even if the form is different):
Search

I couldn’t get to the download of the driver, the web page javascript seems to be failing. However, if you can somehow find out which driver this is, then you might be able to add a kernel module. Keep in mind that downloading a binary Linux driver won’t work because a PC is a different architecture from a Jetson…so you have to compile it or get an arm64/aarch64/ARMv8-a version.

This isn’t my device (which is listed on original post), but looks like it’s used by my hub internally.

I tried to reinstall pulseaudio and alsa, but without success. I noticed HDMI audio to work normally, but no success with USB hub.
Also, I couldn’t download dirvers from unitek page. Not even sure they have their sources tho.

Another weird thing here are my modules. When I type lsmod, all I get is:

Module Size Used by
bcmdhd 7672870 0
bluedroid_pm 13770 0

I have plenty of pulseaudio stuff installed too:

After some log crawling, I noticed a dmesg line saying that it failed to load kernel modules, so I went there and checked:

If I understood it, this module “cuse” wasn’t found, which led me to check /etc/modules file and there are onlye two entries there, BLUEDROID_PM and this NVHOST_VI. I never heard about this CUSE module, but I read somewhere it’s directly used by OSS nodes to send audio to pulseaudio.

Any ideas from here?

Are you using a default kernel, or have you built your own kernel? What is the output of “uname -r”? Do you have kernel modules located at the following location:

/lib/modules/$(uname -r)/

This answer will be long, but I discovered some good infos. I compared my results with a Jetson TX2 with default Dev Kit and working sound.

I’m using the following kernel for my TX1:

nvidia@tegra-ubuntu:~$ uname -r
4.4.38-tegra

As for kernel modules, I have found an interesting missing symlink (last line, bold):

nvidia@tegra-ubuntu:/lib/modules/4.4.38-tegra$ ll

<b><i>lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root    65 Abr  2 08:43 source -> /home/cn/trunk_tx1_28.2/Linux_for_Tegra/sources/kernel/kernel-4.4</i></b>

By default, this symlink named source came pointing to /home/cn/trunk_tx1_28.2/Linux_for_Tegra/sources/kernel/kernel-4.4 which doesn’t exist. I’m not quite sure if this is the root of this problem.
On the other hand, I also have a Jetson TX2 installed on default DevKit and it’s also using 4.4.38-tegra. Modules list is pretty much the same as well:

The basic difference is this t18x folder containing only one file inside: t18x/drivers/net/can/mttcan/native/mttcan.ko. I’m not sure what is this module, but then is checked lsmod and got something on TX2 WITH DevKit:

nvidia@tegra-ubuntu:/lib/modules/4.4.38-tegra$ lsmod
Module Size Used by
<b>fuse 89008 3</b>
bcmdhd 7625819 0
<b>pci_tegra 74691 0</b>
bluedroid_pm 13564 0

TX2’s loaded modules shows two more items: fuse (which I think to be related to mouting stuff) and pci_tegra. I believe this module might have something to do with my problem, since it’s not being loaded on my TX1 + Orbitty setup.
Digging a little more and checking the differences, TX2’s modules.alias points pci_tegra module to:

modules.alias:alias of:N*T*Cnvidia,tegra124-pcie* pci_tegra
modules.alias:alias of:N*T*Cnvidia,tegra210-pcie* pci_tegra
modules.alias:alias of:N*T*Cnvidia,tegra186-pcie* pci_tegra

and my TX1’s don’t even has any trace of this pci_tegra module. Another difference is within /lib/modules/4.4.38-tegra/kernel/drivers/ folder, where TX1 doesn’t has a pci subdir and TX2 does. This subdir contains just one file, pci-tegra.ko.

I was about to post this answer and saw that TX2 /lib/modules/4.4.38-tegra/kernel/ has lib and sound dirs with core and usb as well as sound modules within them. TX1 doesn’t has them. When I plug the USB Hub with my headset in TX2, three additional modules are loaded (the same does’t happen in TX1):

Module Size Used by
snd_usb_audio 183258 2
snd_usbmidi_lib 26147 1 snd_usb_audio
snd_hwdep 8187 1 snd_usb_audio

I’ll post below the complete tree of dirs and files of my TX1+orbitty and TX2+devkit. TX1+orbitty has way less files compared to TX2+devkit. I think we are close.

EDIT 1: Searching for some kind of solution, I found this command to check package config: zcat /proc/config.gz | grep -i snd_usb_audio. For TX1 it results in “# CONFIG_SND_USB_AUDIO is not set” while for TX2 “CONFIG_SND_USB_AUDIO=m”. I’m praying for not needing to recompile this kernel, since it’s a real headache.

The source subdirectory symbolic link is not actually needed. On a desktop PC where the kernel source is an official package this simplifies other apps automatically building against whatever kernel is “current”. You could point this at the source downloaded via the “source_sync.sh” script (it’d have to point to the top level of the kernel source itself, not the out of tree content). I simply ignore those sym links in “/lib/modules/$(uname -r)/”. No content from this sym link is ever actually active content.

FYI, you have a valid kernel and module path. No failure would be due to a misconfigured custom kernel build (the module location is valid). I had originally mentioned the module locations due to the error loading a kernel module. Looking back, I see “cuse” is a user space module. You can read about it here:
http://bryanpendleton.blogspot.com/2011/02/fuse-cuse-and-uio.html

Whatever you use which depends on cuse would fail, but it might be completely unrelated to any USB or audio issues. It does make me curious as to what it is which wants cuse. Your question about whether it is related to OSS nodes might be on target, but I don’t know enough about it to say for sure. About all we can say is that this supports user space character device drivers. PCM devices are indeed character devices, but so are keyboards and mice. It might be a case of researching the driver for that chipset. You could attempt to build cuse.ko and copy it to the right location in the modules directory, but I don’t even know if it is valid for this kernel version and might not matter (or it might matter).

I’m just guessing, but perhaps mttcan is CANbus, which some people will use on embedded systems for communications, e.g., automobile or vending machine style communications. I doubt it is related to audio (I’ve never heard of an audio product using CANbus, although an integrated entertainment system or sound system in an automobile probably links to this…I once had a car where the car alarm was linked in through the radio this way, but it wasn’t audio on the CANbus…the anti-theft made the radio serial number work only on the CANbus matching the serial…someone connecting the radio to the wrong car would find the radio no longer worked without a special reset).

The discovery of “CONFIG_SND_USB_AUDIO=m” (or not set) is more or less a smoking gun when it comes to USB audio via a standard generic USB class. Not all USB audio devices are the generic class, but many are. Some headsets and USB audio devices require special drivers and don’t care about CONFIG_SND_USB_AUDIO. However, the majority do. I think further progress would require building the CONFIG_SND_USB_AUDIO as a module for the TX1 and putting it in place.

Note that you don’t replace the kernel itself when it comes to modules. You do need to compile it, but then it is just a copy into place and either “sudo depmod -a” or reboot (or both). Whenever someone builds a module I do always recommend first building the kernel itself as a sanity check to see if the configuration is good. Just don’t install the kernel. Then build the modules, and copy over only that one module.

I wouldn’t normally suggest this, but since you have a TX2 with the same module…if and only if the “uname -r” is identical on the TX1 and TX2…there is a possibility that copy of the TX2 module into the same location on the TX1 would work. Then see if “sudo depmod -a” and reboot does the job. Just don’t feel bad if the module is rejected since there might be other required features in need of being added which the module itself depends on (it is a chain of dependencies…sometimes it is a single link in the chain, sometimes it is a long chain).

Well this could be a very good trick to make it work.

I ended up switching my TX1 module to a TX2 module in my Orbitty so the sound worked. However I’ll let your answer as accepted since it would probably work.

Thank you so much for your help!
