Quadro 1000m in ThinkPad w520 not working with 390.48

My old Thinkpad W520 has a quadro 1000M. I wonder if this is not longer supported by the 390 driver, it is surprisingly hard for me to find out if it is Fermi generation card. The wikipedia entry for Nvidia drivers as the letter F in its ‘core’. It is not listed as being an unsupported card and nvidia download still directs me to 390.48 as the driver. Yet the driver does not load. I will make a bug report and attach it here.

I can not reproduce this problem on a clean install, so it is not a nvidia driver problem.

this was due a broken uninstall of prime-select, the ubuntu package to swap graphics cards on Optimus. It left a blacklist-nvidia file in /etc/modprobe.d

This may be been something that went a bit haywire when upgrading from 17.10 to 18.04.
