I am looking to purchase some RTX A5000 GPUs to use for vGPU, however I am getting confused if it will work.
The RTX A5000 is listed as in ‘Full Support’ under NVIDIA® Virtual GPU Software Supported GPUs - NVIDIA Docs since version 12.2
My workstations are Dell 5820, and list the NVIDIA RTX A5000 as a supported GPU - Dell Precision 5820 Tower Owner’s Manual | Dell UK
The Qualified System Catalog - NVIDIA Enterprise Marketplace shows the 5820 as ‘NVIDIA-Certified’ for the A5000
So up to this point, it all looks positive. However my confusion stems around the vGPU specifics.
As noted in ‘Virtual GPU Software User Guide’
Some GPUs support display-off and display-enabled modes but must be used in NVIDIA vGPU software deployments in display-off mode.
The A5000 is one of these GPUs that needs the display mode to be set to off using displaymodeselector (NVIDIA Display Mode Selector Tool)
As noted in the ‘Using the NVIDIA Display Mode Selector Tool User Guide’
The NVIDIA Display Mode Selector Tool should only be used on NVIDIA vGPU certified systems. A list of all NVIDIA vGPU certified systems is available at www.nvidia.com/en-us/data-center/resources/vgpu-certified-servers
This redirects you back to the ‘Qualified System Catalog - NVIDIA Enterprise Marketplace’ where I have already confirmed the Dell 5820 is listed - therefore, is the Dell 5820 certified for vGPU?
To clarify I cannot find ‘vGPU software certification’ category - so am unclear if it should work
Using the NVIDIA Display Mode Selector Tool on systems that have not passed vGPU software certification can cause the GPU PCle board and system to be permanently unusable
I am concerned if I am reading the documentation wrong, I will prevent the workstation from booting if it cannot handle the larger BAR1 after changing the GPU to displaymodeselector --gpumode physical_display_disabled
Does anyone have any experience using the RTX A5000 in compute mode for vGPU within a Dell 5820?
Failing that, I would be keen to know what hardware you have it working in? Preferability a workstation chassis or a Supermicro motherboard I could install into a short depth rack case.
Thanks in advance
