Select Unity or Gnome/Ubuntu desktop

I have both Unity and Gnome desktop. I know that I can log on with either Unity or Gnome desktop by selecting the gear icon, but I have a need to programmatically choose between the two desktop options. Are there some configuration files I can change to boot up in Unity vs Gnome desktop?
