Set eth0 MAC address without EEPROM

Hello,

I have a custom carrier board that does not have an EEPROM for the MAC address. Our goal is to set the MAC to a default value with the flashed image and then modify the MAC address to be unique for each board by running a script on boot with our vendor-specific MAC address in a config file.

The only place I can find the MAC address setting in the device tree (ether_qos@2490000 node) does not have an effect.

Is my goal possible, or do I need to revise the board and add EEPROM?

This is not correct. The eeprom is inside tx2 module but not carrier board.
Please check the eeprom layout and also be careful about the checksum in eeprom.

Oh! I missed that in the integration guide.

At the same time that we fabricated our custom carrier boards we also ordered a case of new TX2 4GB modules, and upon flashing and boot we see messages about no hardware address and selecting a random hardware address.

Wish document contains information on how to reprogram the EEPROM?

Well, the I2c timeouts I previously posted seem to be related to HDMI as I disabled display outputs (our carrier has no display) and they went away.

However, I see another timeout much earlier in the boot process (it was in the previous build as well):

I don’t get the point to check those i2c errors here. The boot log from bootloader will tell you if you have mac addr in your eeprom or also you could check the node /proc/device-tree/chosen/nvidia,ether-mac

Also, for “using random self ethernet address” I believe this log is not for the eth0 mac addr.

You could check the eth0 mac in every boot. It should be always a fixed value.
If not, please share your boot log with us.

The reason I started looking for this is because the Jetson gets a new MAC address on every boot as monitored from our network switch.

Since this is TX2-4GB I would expect the WIFI and BT MAC to be null, but not Ethernet.

If you put this module back to devkit, it would have ethernet mac, right?

I think this issue is due to missing tca9539 on your custom board so that i2c does not work.

  2. Confirm if this is hardware-dependent issue. (I don’t think so)

  • case 1: only custom carrier board can reproduce this issue
  • case 2: Even devkit can reproduce this issue ->module problem
  1. We need to know why it cannot be read by cboot during boot.
  • check 1 : please download the eeprom layout from download center and calculate if the checksum in eeprom is correct
  • (If you modified eeprom value before, then it has chance to be incorrect.)
  • check 2: Download the cboot source and enable some debug print in "partner/common/lib/board_info/tegrabl_board_info.c" -> tegrabl_get_mac_address and rebuilt the cboot source to debug

I confirmed the CRC in the EEPROM is correct using the python code in the EEPROM document with with script below. I believe this CRC method is specifically “CRC-8/Maxim” as other CRC-8 algorithms I tried do not match.
