[Solved] Ubuntu 14.04 login-loop after installing nvidia-384

Hello,

I have issues on succesfully installing a nvidia-driver on my notebook. Following information:

The notebook is a msi GL72 7RDX with built-in intel graphics card and additional nvidaia Geforce GTX1050.

As OS I am using Ubuntu 14.04, which is necessary for running nvidia DriveWorks. After a fresh install of the OS, the Xorg.0.log had already some errors (see attached “Xorg.0.fresh.log”)

Then I tried to install a working nvidia-driver for the GTX1050, executing ‘sudo apt-get install nvidia-384 nvidia-settings nvidia-prime’. The install process went well and without any errors.
After the reboot I fell into the so-called “login-loop”, as I can not log in on the graphic user interface. After entering my password and pressing ENTER, the login mask returns emmediately. A login via the console is possible. The Xorg.0.log for this state is attached as “Xorg.0.nvdrv.log”

A “nvidia-bug-report” could not be created as the “nvidia-bug-report.sh” could not be found on the system.

I tried many of the solutions found on the web previously, without any success.
BIOS i running in LEGACY mode.
.Xauthority was owned by me.

I just noticed, that in the current state, there is no .Xauthority file on the system.

I need the working driver in preparation to get nvidia DriveWorks running.

For further information, please don’t hesitate to write me.

Greetings

Xorg.0.upd.log (17.5 KB)
Xorg.0.nvdrv.log (18.7 KB)
nvidia-bug-report.log.gz (80.8 KB)

The problem is not the nvidia but the intel. It’s a Sky or Kaby Lake model where the iGPU needs additional firmware (packages intel-microcode and linux-firmware) and a more recent kernel. While I think Ubuntu somehow supports that in 14.04.4 I’d rather choose 16.04.

Hello generix,

I updated the Kernel to 4.2.0-42-generic using ‘sudo apt-get install linux-generic-lts-wily’

Also I executed ‘sudo apt-get install intel-microcode’ and ‘sudo apt-get install linux-firmware’

After restart, the Xorg.0.log showed the same errors as aforementioned Xorg.0.nvdrv.log

The login loop problem still exists

Too old. Kernel 4.8 or higher needed or a backported i915 driver which I don’t know if it exists.
14.04 has only 1.5 years support left, btw.

Taken a look at 14.04, the current HWE should be 14.04.5 using kernel 4.4 and the package linux-image-extra should contain the backported driver i915_bpo.
Use
lsmod | grep i915 to see if it gets loaded. Run nvidia-bug-report.sh from /usr/lib/nvidia-XXX/bin
with XXX being the version of the driver and attach the output file to your post.

lsmod | grep i915 printed out following:

i915 1130496 0
i2c_algo_bit 16384 1 i915
drm_kms_helper 126976 2 i915,nvidia_drm
drm 360448 4 i915,drm_kms_helper,nvidia_drm
video 40960 2 i915,msi_umi

nvidia-bug-report.log.gz is attached to post

Kernel 4.2 won’t work, you’re getting kernel backtraces unrelated to gpus. To upgrade to the current hwe of 14.04 use

sudo apt-get -s install --install-recommends linux-generic-lts-xenial xserver-xorg-core-lts-xenial xserver-xorg-lts-xenial xserver-xorg-video-all-lts-xenial xserver-xorg-input-all-lts-xenial libwayland-egl1-mesa-lts-xenial
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg-lts-xenial

(c/p from ubuntu hwe page)
then blacklist the normal i915 driver by adding

blacklist i915

to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
Reboot, use lsmod | grep i915 to see if i915_bpo gets loaded. Run nvidia-bug-report.sh again.
Though I wonder when this is a fresh install, why have you been using the old hwe? Downloaded wrong install file?

I did as you told.

Kernel and hwe are still the same (according to Xorg.0.log)

nvidia-bug-report is attached to this comment

used for installation a boot-disc given by it-departement to me (also tried it with 16.04, but there the nouveau-driver was very slow, so i used 14.04)
nvidia-bug-report.log.gz (80.9 KB)

Like said, it was a c/p and I didn’t notice it had the -s (simulate) option in it. So please run the apt-get commands again but this time remove the -s if the last run didn’t give any errors.
You could have also stayed with 16.04 and install the proprietary driver afterwards to get full accel, just like you did with 14.04.

Installation of hwe was succesfull

Ubuntu 14.04.5 is running with Kernel 4.4.0-101-generic

nvidia-bug-report throws ACPI-errors; see attached file
nvidia-bug-report.171207-2.log.gz (81 KB)

The ACPI errors are “normal”, ignore. System looks better.
You now have the kernel parameter “nomodeset”, please remove that (edit /etc/default/grub and run sudo update-grub).
The normal i915 driver still gets loaded, add the blacklist entry and run sudo update-initramfs -u
Reboot, post a new nvidia-bug-report.

System looks great now

I can login into graphics desktop

nvidia-driver is running smoothly

no more errors in Xorg.0.log

should I do ‘sudo apt-get update upgrade dist-upgrade’ once more?
nvidia-bug-report.171207-3.log.gz (89.4 KB)

dist-upgrade would take you to the next ubuntu version, since this is a fresh install without data, you’d rather just do a fresh install of 16.04.3. But if you want to train yourself, you can of course do a dist-upgrade.

Definitely do apt-get update then upgrade, there’s only one thing open, from demsg

[ 1.790020] i915_bpo 0000:00:02.0: Direct firmware load for i915/kbl_dmc_ver1.bin failed with error -2
[ 1.790024] i915_bpo 0000:00:02.0: Failed to load DMC firmware [https://01.org/linuxgraphics/intel-linux-graphics-firmwares], disabling runtime power management.

Ubuntu took this specific firmware out of the package at one point due to a regression it caused but it’s unclear to me if this is still the case. So update, reboot then use dmesg |grep “i915_bpo” to see if the message is still there. Then you can decide if you’re manually downloading it and put it in /lib/firmware/i915 or live with it.
Then give your IT a kick because they gave you an outdated install media. Normal procedure would have been:
download Ubuntu 16.04.03 or if necessary 14.04.5, not 16.04, not 16.04.1, not 16.04.2, not 14.04…
put it on a thumb drive
boot
install
reboot
login
klick on ‘install proprietary nvidia driver’
reboot
finish.

PS: when you do a dist-upgrade and you get a kernel >4.8 you have to remove the blacklist i915 entry and udate-initramfs again.

OK, it seems, my problem is solved

Thank you for your great service

Have a nice day

I have the same problem described in this post, but with Ubuntu 16.04. I have a Supermicro GPU server with two k80s that I am trying to set up as a compute box to run multi-gpu applications I have compiled on a development box running two C2075s Unbuntu 14.04. I had not problem setting up the development box, but have a snag setting up the compute box. In setting the box up I installed Nvidia driver on the compute box using sudo apt-get install nvidia-384 nvidia-modprobe". and copied the pgi REDIST directory to its normal location in /opt, setup the LD_LIBRARY_PATH env variable to point to REDIST. This all works well in that I can then run by applications imported from my development box. The problem is, if I re-boot the compute box I get the login-loop problem, as described in this post. I tried the running the fix as described, but the command “sudo apt-get -s install --install-recommends …” does not run as is on Ubuntu 16.04 and I do not have a i915 driver as described. If I purge the nivdia driver with “sudo apt-get purge nvidia*” the login-loop problem goes away. Hence, my current mode of working is to power-up the compute box, login, install the nvidia drivers, run my jobs, purge the nvidia drivers, power off. Not the most efficient. Is there a similar fix for my situation? Any help would be much appreciated.
