System freezes dead (any distribution)

When I’m playing games or otherwise loading the computer, the system freezes dead at any kernel (only a reboot helps). There used to be a problem, such a problem (it appeared ± half a year ago). During such freezes, journalctl wrote: GPU has fallen off the bus (Nvidia). This problem went away (sometimes can be gpu has fallen of the bus, but sometimes even without it) after I wrote in the grub settings acpi=noirq thermal.off=1 And the error disappeared, but the freezes remained. Here are the kernel logs:

What you are reporting is confusing information initially. If you are crashing while playing games, or crashing while starting your computer, those are two distinct problems.

Looking at dmesg the freeze occurs after systemd starts to load, after the kernel goes through it’s typical startup procedure. Generally when the system freezes on bootup it is because of either the lack of an nvidia driver, which crashes the desktop environment, and it’s startup process, or it’s because the nvidia driver was not installed properly, which can happen for various reasons. Other than that you could have a problem with your hardware itself, which is the first place we should ideally look when troubleshooting any problem.

Here’s what I can identify based on the information
you have provided.

Youre using the Linux version 6.8.1-zen1-1-zen kernel

You’re using EndeavorOS based on the kernel command line, and you have an nvidia driver installed, and you
are using btrfs.

The kernel goes through it’s standard startup procedure

There are some errors I’ve never seen before reported,
and that have to do with nvidia

That’s normal, and shouldn’t be a problem unless your using ubuntu’s latest features, and follow it’s security guidelines which prevent unregistered modules from being loaded.

Searching around a bit about some of your error messages, people are confirming that this is related to your hardware as opposed to issues in software.

Thing is, looking at google search results around “gpu has fallen off the bus” people are reporting information related to a hardware issue, but, you apparently installed linux using your nvidia card without issues, and on multiple distro’s, sometimes getting to do some gaming.

If you could provide more information about what hardware you are using, how you go about your basic installation, and anything else you can think of related to your overall setup, that would be helpful.

The standard workaround, to get past a crashed boot process and an nvidia card + innappropriate linux configuration (which is what typically crashes the boot process) is to append nomodeset to the kernel command line.

Either that, or, you can append the number 3 to your kernels command line, with a systemd based init system which tells systemd to boot into runlevel 3 instead of a graphical desktop environment. There you will have a terminal to interact with your system, where you can attempt to fix the problem as well.

Afterwards you are going to want to switch to the x11 display server, and if your problem still exists, then you revert to a different kernel, or reinstall the driver properly, checking it’s installation every step of the way to make sure there are no errors reported.

edit:
It could be the case that you have a problem, unrelated to nvidia actually, but without more information we have no way of knowing, barring literal experience with these issues.

In your last quoted section it states that the nvidia kernel module is unloaded, and an nvidia crash dump has been created. You can try to recreate the crash and grab the log to upload it here, or you can try to properly configure your system initially, and see if you can get it working.

Please check your psu and monitor temperatures.

I tried to install both via pacman (or another package depending on the distribution) sudo pacman -S nvidia-utils nvidia-settings xorg-server xorg-xinit mesa lib32-nvidia-utils lib32-mesa or with dkms depending on the kernel, as well as directly from the nvidia site. Here are the logs of the nvidia

In general, everything is fine with the psu, it is not damaged and connected well.

Your system is misconfigured. I didn’t notice when I first responded to you that you say a reboot helps. That means that your system is working, but sometimes the line of processes’ based on your configuration can sometimes crash.

Your install should be very simple, to help you identify problems in the future.

You have to identify the main aspects of your overall configuration to discover what the conflict is.

What desktop environment are you using?

What’s your display server? (x11 or wayland)

What kind of games are you playing that crash?

What did you specifically do to your system, before the crashes started occuring?

How are you installing your driver? Are you using the distributions documented methods?

What kind of filesystem are you using? Partitioning scheme? Bios or Uefi?

How do you customize your system beyond the defaults they ship with?

I have played around with all of the distributions too, and customized them as heavily as I am able to, which produces crashes like you are describing, and that is how I solve the problem.

Usually the custom gaming kernels like liquorix, xanmod, tkg, maybe even zen, can break the boot process, and sometimes a reboot helps like you describe.

So I would attempt to use a standard kernel initially, to help you narrow down other problems with your overall configuration.

And a last point, reducing the amount of automatic processes’ helps deal with this problem too, and will help prevent the system from crashing. That means disabling unnecessary startup programs and services.

Defaults alone aren’t enough to prevent crashes and provide a stable environment in reality, since everyone uses computers differently. You actually have to customize your setup to make your own stable environment.

  1. Gnome or kde (The problem is on both)
  2. x11
  3. Apex legends, ready or not, Hoi4(Any games)
  4. The only thing I touched was mitigations=off, that’s all, but what I tried to clean up and what didn’t is the same. Not affected again
  5. Conditionally on void linux I use documented, on arch and its derivatives sudo pacman -S nvidia-utils nvidia-settings xorg-server xorg-xinit mesa lib32-nvidia-utils lib32-mesa but tried it through the site
  6. Btrfs and the separation is usually automatic, which is suggested by the distr sometimes /boot - 1024mb BTRFS /boot/efi - 256mb / - 30720mb BTRFS /home - the rest of the BTRFS remainder, uefi
  7. On the gnome, I just download the theme and icons, as well as from the add-ons blur my shell (But it also paints in the stock). I tried vanilla os at all, I didn’t touch the system at all, stupidly steamed to check, it still crashes and on opensuse the same

Bro

Use a stable distribution

Not rolling

Rolling distributions are going to routinely break, just like you describe. That’s the not-so-fine-print for all those arch based, and rolling distro’s.

Gnome and KDE are probably the most unstable desktop environments in general, and especially right now since they are having lots of dramatic changes pushed out onto everybody, that is breaking lots of people’s computers.

Use a stable distro, use a stable desktop environment.

Kde 5.23 (less than 6) is stable

Older gnome than the absolute newest should be stable.

I would recommend installing a new desktop environment besides the other ones you would rather use, that is stable, such as xfce, so you can switch to it, when the others pose problems.

(just want to point out this is the perfect example, what you are describing, of what unstable versus stable means)

But is opensuse leap considered unstable, or for example fedora 38, pop os or linux mint with xfce there is also this (

They can be, because what happens is -

Everyone has a different computer than each other,

and so their whole configuration is different ultimately.

You’ve got to understand that an operating system is a complex web of different programs and processes’

You really want to find yourself a stable system, and avoid the distributions that shove out the newest packages onto people. That is where, you will find systems breaking consistently, and wasting your time. I would recommend to you using debian or ubuntu, which don’t shove out the latest developments onto people.

A lot of times problems that people have with different distributions aren’t reported. So what may seem like a good pick from the outside looking in, may actually be a unstable-broken environment for you.

But the problem on them is the same as on the rolling(Exactly mine)

So youre saying that your system crashes using kde 6 and also kde 5.23? In the same way?

Exactly, although this was not the case before. And the last time everything was good, I sat on a clean arch with a zen kernel and kde

It’s like I said, a lot of things have changed since then. I can’t identify anything in your bug-report that looks like of order. It looks like you aren’t installing your driver appropriately. On endeavourOS they have an installer for nvidia that works well. I would rebuild your system from the ground up->

I.e. backup any files you want to save
reinstall the operating system
make sure to pick out x11 as your display server instead of wayland
try to clean your system as much as possible, reducing unnecessary automatic programs like services
use the nvidia-inst utility that endeavor provides to install your nvidia driver

or if you want an easier system to deal with, then you’re going to want to switch to a stable OS,
or attempt to avoid major upgrades on arch and work with what you got.

At the moment I’m sitting on endeavouros and I’ve already chosen the option with ready-made nvidia drivers and always sit on x11. I’ve tried the ustanipower clean system of endeavouros, for example, without a custom kernel only nvidia which was offered when installing which were out of the box and out of the package only steam. System still crashed.

So your system is working now

But steam crashes.

System still crashed. I mean, only the steam was downloaded

What have you tried doing so far to fix the problem?

Everything you are reporting is very confusing, so it’s going to be hard for anyone to help you.

Tried different startup options acpi=noirq, thermal.off=1, ahci.mobile_lpm_policy=1. More /usr/bin/nvidia-smi -pm 1. Custom kernels zen, xanmod, lts, as well as stock kernels are available. I tried different ways to install drivers. I checked, cleaned the computer itself

What made you choose these choices?

Tried different startup options acpi=noirq, thermal.off=1, ahci.mobile_lpm_policy=1.

Please report, also, whether or not your system is working normally as you expect it should, with nomodeset appended to your kernel commandline.
