Unable to use P1000 on proxmox; "RmInitAdapter failed!" in dmesg and nvidia-smi claims "No devices were found"

I’m trying to use a Quadro P1000 in my r720 to help with encoding media. My plan was to install the drivers in the proxmox host itself so that containers running on the machine are able to make use of the P1000.

I followed instructions from the proxmox forums for installing the drivers and downloaded and installed 535.113.01. The installation seems to succeed, but when I run nvidia-smi it claims that no devices were found. I do see the p1000 listed in lspci, so it seems like it should be there, but I’m not certain what the next steps should be for debugging this.

I’ve tried moving the card around into different slots to no avail. I haven’t tried to install it in another machine yet, but I was planning installing it in my windows workstation just to check. Aside from that it’s probably worth pointing out that the card is installed on a riser within an r720, which I suppose might also be problematic.

A quick update. When I tried to use the P1000 on my windows workstation it displayed some corrupted garbage on my monitor, and windows said it was having trouble. In addition to that, I put an old rtx 2060 I had sitting around in the r720 and nvidia-smi seems to find that just fine.

So I’d guess the P1000 is actually just defective, which probably isn’t an enormous surprise since I acquired it secondhand.
