Updating to 18.04 from 16.04 on new Tx2

I just received the TX2 and want to put ROS Melodic on it as well as MoveIt for ROS, the problem being that it’s only supported on 18.04 and TX2 ships with version 16. When i try to run the updater to get it moved from 16.04 to 18.04 it fails. Normally i’d post this on the Ubuntu forums but since this is fresh out of the box i wanted to see if anyone else has had this problem and if there was already a known solution.

The Ubuntu upgrade to new release mechanism has no understanding of the drivers and will require reflashing through the NVIDIA provided flash software. I do suspect that the next release of that software will probably provide Ubuntu 18 (called L4T when it is Ubuntu with NVIDIA drivers). Release dates are never given, but I think we’re probably around the time when a new release would be available (we probably don’t have much longer to wait).

I don’t know if it is possible, but would anyone be able to confirm if the next release will be Ubuntu 18.04?

That’s correct, the next release of JetPack will support Ubuntu 18.04 for TX2.

In the meantime, some community members have found an unofficial way to install 18.04 on TX2 - see this post: https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topic/1043896/jetson-tx2/-guide-how-to-install-ubuntu-18-04-on-tx2/

Is the new Jetpack supports ROS melodic???
