AGX Orin Black Screen on Boot

I recently received a new AGX Orin and began normal setup. I made some driver error and now the Orin shows a black screen.

The boot splash appears as normal. Attempting to press ESC to go into the BIOS has no effect. After some seconds, the fan turns on and then off again, and the keyboard connected via USB begins to work (at least insofar as pressing the “Caps Lock” key causes the light to turn on and off). The monitor reports that there is no video signal and enters sleep mode, regardless of what I input. Multiple monitors and cables were tried.

I have attempted to enter recovery mode and reflash the device, using an external connection to both a Windows and a Linux computer through a USB-C cable on the Orin through the USB-C port marked online as the proper one for reflashing. In these cases, I pressed both the reboot and recovery mode buttons as stated online, trying from both the device being on already and from a powered off state. In all cases, the Orin could not be detected - eg “lsusb” revealed no connected NVidia device, and the SDK Manager reported no board is connected. Device Manager in Windows did not reveal an active port.

What are the remaining options at this point in order to reflash or otherwise “reset” the Orin to its original state? All attempted mainline recovery techniques seem to have failed, and my coworker is of the belief at this point that the device is physically broken (though it is hard for us to verify).

There is no BIOS in any of the Jetsons, or in most embedded systems. That lives in software rather than hardware like a PC BIOS. As a result the access for picking boot device and such are custom to each device, and in the case of Jetsons (and many many embedded devices), one has to use the serial console in order to access that functionality. Early boot (before Linux is loaded) drivers for serial UART console are trivial, whereas a real keyboard and monitor driver is much more complex. Can you try to access over serial console and hitting the escape key at the proper moment?

Incidentally, almost every boot-related issue has as its number one first question if the full serial console boot log can be posted. This shows what goes on even before Linux starts to load. Often it is just something related to video failing, perhaps the Jetson is booting and you just can’t see it.

If you are new to this device, please make sure your host machine is not a VM, type C cable in the right usb port. There is only one type C on the carrier board which can flash.

Also, make sure you know how to put the board into recovery mode. Actually, recovery button should be the first pressed and last released button and whether you should press reset or power button depends on whether your board is in powered-on state or not. If the board is already powered- on , then rec button pressed and hold → reset button pressed → release reset → release rec.
Otherwise, replace reset button to power button and do the same order.

And Windows is not able to flash sdkmanager, so no need to try it. Just focus on the native Ubuntu machines.

Try to change to different host also.

Following the instructions you gave, I was able to successfully boot the Orin into recovery mode. I can see this from the following:

I then followed the instructions on Quick Start — Jetson Linux<br/>Developer Guide 34.1 documentation , including downloading the tar files, creating the environment variables, etc.

The target board is indeed connected through USB port and is in recovery mode, so obviously something further is wrong. I did manage the serial connection discussed by linuxdev as well, including logging into the account I made through said connection, but I wasn’t sure how to get the output so as to post it. I will respond to linuxdev’s comment shortly.

There are two points here look like error

  1. Did you just give ${BOARD} to flash.sh? That is actually a variable and shouldn’t be just “BOARD”.

  2. Are you still able to “log in” into the system after you put the board into recovery mode? If so, obviously it is not in recovery mode. Also, that number “7045” is not a Orin recovery mode usb id.

No concern there. Indeed, at first I did have an error of the form that I had given an invalid devkit name, because I had erroneously set the variable to “jetson_agx_orin_devkit”, with underscores rather than hyphens. That was a different problem, however.

2: I rebooted the Orin so as to log into it - at that point it was no longer in recovery mode. So far as I can tell, it was in fact in recovery mode beforehand, or else I would not have been able to see any entry at all when calling lsusb. I noted that it was of the form of a recovery mode entry, but I did wonder at 7045. To quote the quickstart page:

  • 7023 for Jetson AGX Orin (P3701-0000)

I was confused by this but ultimately determined that the page may have just not been updated or something to that effect. Checking lsusb now (when it is in normal operation mode) I see the same entry still there, which raises the concern that it may not have been in FRC mode after all (which would be a problem, of course). I will try entering Force Recovery Mode again, keeping a close eye on the terminal output, and see what happens.

If the board is in recovery mode, then your console output shall not print anything. The board would be just like brick until next time you reboot the device.

BTW, the orin board usb id could be 7223 or 7023.

It appears that the device was indeed not in recovery mode before. Now SDK Manager can find it, and so too did things progress further than before. However, the script still ultimately failed to run, as may be seen below.

I can see that something went wrong - putting aside the Python warnings, it looks like something was misconfigured on my computer and/or some other misconfiguration, that made reading the board state not possible.

I decided to try using the SDKManager as well, just to see what would happen, but I cannot choose a target operating system. It just says “No releases available for Ubuntu2204” and does not let me choose an alternative or progress to step 2.

That python error is ok. Please just hold and wait for the next release. The release would be released in one week.

Your board may only be able to get flashed with that release.

If you can boot the device, then we may help confirm.
