Cannot setup WLAN0

Hi,

I’ve tried for days now to figure this out: my WLAN0 seems to exist, yet when I try using it, I get all sorts of weird errors.

I am using the TX2 with an Orbitty Carrier board; as such I had to flash using Orbitty’s drivers for the USB-3.0 support. Therefore reflashing the board is my last option (since I’ve also spent days setting it up with OpenCV, Caffe2, ROS, etc).

When I try ifconfig I get:

When I run sudo ifconfig wlan0 up everything is fine.
Using iwconfig however:

sudo iwconfig wlan0
wlan0     no wireless extensions.

Similarly, when trying to scan:

sudo iwlist wlan0 scan
wlan0     Interface doesn't support scanning.

Or set a specific ESSID:

iwconfig wlan0 essid MY_NET key MY_PASS
Cannot read /proc/net/wireless
Error for wireless request "Set ESSID" (8B1A) :
    SET failed on device wlan0 ; Invalid argument.

There does not exist a /proc/net/wireless and I have no clue what is going on.
Has anyone encountered this before, or know what could have caused it?
For reference I’m using L4T 28.1

Thanks a lot, it does indeed seem to scan and connect to our wifi when using nmcli.
I am assuming that iwconfig doesn’t work particularly well on TX2?

However, the problem still persists, and even worse there are no errors;
after the WiFi is brought up, I can’t ping it, I can’t ssh it into it,
although the TX2 seems connected, I don’t get any responses.

The Airport shows the Tegra connected, with excellent quality, 144Mb/s data rate, RSSI ~37dBm using 802.11b/g/n.

However pings to the Tegra’s IP simply hang up, and so do ssh connections.
I reconnect the ethernet, and ssh into it, and ifconfig shows:

So AFAIK, nothing seems to be wrong with it. I have the antennae attached and about 1 meter away from the Airport AP.
I disconnected and reconnected to the WiFi and run an nmap on the local network, and indeed I can’t find the TX2 connected.
The TX2 however still shows the interface alive, and can ping both the router and other PCs in the network!

I’ve turned on 5Gh as well as 2.4Gh just in case; Tegra seems to have connected and is responding to pings. However SSH has become unresponsive, or rather extremely slow to use under a realistic condition. Signal seems to be at 80% constantly.
Also, since I’ve connected the Wifi, routing seems to be broken; I can’t ping external IPs, nor can I pull apt-get packages.
I realise this is probably a software/configuration issue.

Hi, well the issue seems to have been with the Gnome software changing the settings somehow (I was always SSHing and forgot about Gnome). I attached a monitor and keyboard, and now the issue is gone. Seems that all traffic was trying to be routed through eth0 for some reason.

I’ll speculate…some services are dependent upon being logged in to a GUI to take ownership of hardware, e.g., a hot plug SD card or mouse. It is possible the setup to enable WiFi is tied to the GUI login. This in turn would update routes.

I can see the wifi network created by the nvidia on other ubuntu machines, but I cannot connect to it, with or without passkey enabled. The errors I seem to get are the same as your initial post, though.

Any ideas or pointers that might help? I am using L4T 28.2 downloaded form

In my case I was trying through the gui because I always ssh into it.
Seems that Gnome was taking over control of the Wifi, so I suggest you hook up a monitor and keyboard and see if this is the case for you as well. In your case, you are setting it up as an AP so something is overriding your configuration would be my first guess.

If you are using rel-28.2 release and rootfs, you don’t need to install any other app to control wifi.
Please try with the ubuntu GUI to open wifi first.

I tried that too, but faced the same issue.
However I changed the timeout of /etc/dhcp/dhclient.conf and restarted both dnsmasq (which failed to load on boot) and network-manager in rc.local which seems to have solved the problem.

During boot, the dnsmasq would fail to start, as seen in the list of startup processes/services. Once dnsmasq has been started by rc.local (ie it’s started every time the Jetson boots up) it works perfectly.

The timeout in /etc/dhcp/dhclient.conf sets the number of seconds that the Jetson waits, looking for a connection via ethernet, before it assigns an IP to the WIFI access point. During this time, the access point is visible, but trying to connect to it simply gives no response.

Could you share what timeout value did you set? I see the default value is 300.
I just wonder why dnsmasq fail to start and why it is related to dhclient. Sorry that I still don’t have enough time to fully look into this issue.
