Cannot switch to YCbCr using XOrg 1.19.6 / P2000 / 390.87 driver

I am trying to enable YCbCr output on the Quadro P2000 card on Linux (buildroot) by setting the following option in xorg.conf:
Option “ColorSpace” “YCbCr444”
Option “ColorRange” “Limited”

I am using a DP->HDMI converter (4k capable) and HDMI->SDI converter that allows me to read the signal type. I tested both in 1080p as well as 2160p modes. Also, both converters report YCbCr support in the EDID (see XOrg log) and I can enable YCbCr in Windows (on the same system / cables / converter).

X.Org.log shows the following line:
Failed to set requested color space for ‘BMD Blackmagic’

Also, I can’t enable the color space in the nvidia-settings (button is disabled).

What could be the reason that YCbCr cannot be enabled?

Ultimately I would like to enable 30-bit mode as well, but I didn’t succeed with 24-bit neither. Any further information for that or should it work when Depth is set to 30. There is a note in the README that 30-bit is not supported in HDMI. Does that include conversion from DisplayPort? YCbCr422/10bit should work?

That’s really odd, only RGB detected as possible color space which contradicts the EDID info.
Please check if it’s still the case when you remove

Neither removing the ColorRange option nor adding the ModeValidation option changed anything.

I agree that it is odd that only RGB is detected. I have to say that I can configure YCbCr without a problem on Windows. Thus it has to be related to the Linux driver or X11 interaction.

What options for further debugging do I have?

This has to be some strange driver bug, maybe in conjunction with the dp2hdmi dongle, idk. I can’t see any further debugging options, better run nvidia-bug-report.sh as root and then send the resulting .gz file and the xorg log to linux-bugs[at]nvidia.com to have someone at nvidia take a look at it.

I can confirm that it is somehow related to the DP-HDMI converter. (I use Club 3D CAC-1070). When I use a passive DP-HDMI cable it seams to work, but I can’t get to 4k.
Nevertheless, the hardware supports it (see Windows), thus there is still a bug in Linux that doesn’t allow activating it when the adapter is used.
I will do more testing next week and send a bug report to NVIDIA.

Exactly that 3D Club dongle has been problematic with the linux driver before, looks like you hit another bug.

Do you have a list of known well-working DP-HDMI adapters for 4k?

Not really, I only remember that at the same time the 3D Club dongle failed, another user had one from D-Link working while both dongles oddly used the same converter chip.
Edit: my memory fooled me, it was from Delock, not D-Link.

Also you mention using DP->HDMI converter that also reports signal type. That sounds very useful for debugging (especially color depth info). I’d buy one of those. I tried googling but found nothing. What’s the converter called you use?
