Freeze with newer GPUs

I have a whole range of problems with various driver releases:

  1. The latest driver/GPU combination I can get working with Xen (4.3) is 319.82 with 8800GT (512MB). Later driver causes Xorg to lock up the instant it initializes the display. The last thing in the log is “Setting mode” and thereafter the keyboard and display become unresponsive.

I just tried a GT 630 4GB card with the exact same driver and exact same settings (same xorg.conf) and that also causes the same lock-up. I can get Xorg working if I set Accel=off in xorg.conf, but that results in unusably slow performance.

I tried various other options in xorg.conf but none helped.

I looked at the kernel module parameters, but I cannot find any reference to what the various options actually mean.

The one obvious difference in Xorg.0.log is that with 8800GT the driver uses 768MB of virtual memory for indirect memory access and with the GT630 it uses 3072MB. I tried setting IndirectMemoryAccess=off without Accel=off but that didn’t work. There doesn’t appear to be a xorg.conf option to explicitly specify the amount of virtual memory the driver should use for indirect memory access. I also cannot find any options in the Xorg driver to force it to assume that the card only has 512MB of RAM to rule out an issue related to RAM size. Is there a kernel module option that does that?

Is there a reasonably sensible way to troubleshoot this further? I would very much like to use the GT 630 rather than the 8800GT because the former is passively cooled and draws less power.

The exact same xorg.conf works with 8800GT and Quadro 2000 cards, but produces a crash with the GT 630. The motherboard in question is the EVGA SR-2 (NF200 PCIe bridges).

The same GT 630 card works just fine in a different machine (Intel X38 chipset), so the card itself isn’t faulty.

I tried the 331.89 driver as well with identical results.

As far as I can tell by looking at the log produced by working cards, the next thing that should happen is loading of NV-GLX extensions. If I stat X with -extension NV-GLX, it immediately segfaults.

When the crash that goes with the log above occurs, X uses 100% of CPU and ksoftirqd/0 uses another 100% of CPU.

I tried booting the kernel with noapic and noacpi, and tried disabled ASPM, but none of it made any difference.

Also attached is the truncated nvidia bug report log (truncated because it doesn’t complete, it hangs), but the machine is responsive to ssh.
