Driver Crash 304/310/319 with Mathematica 8.0/9.0 on GF119M

Hi,

I ran into a strange reproduceable bug where Mathematica makes the
NVIDIA X driver crash on our HP All-in-One(s). We have 16 of these
machines in our computer lab, the bug occurs every time and on all the
machines (that I tried). When Mathematica tries to open the notebook
window, the X server crashes and throws me back to the login screen.
I see nothing about the crash in the logs (attached).

The machines have a

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GF119M [GeForce 610M] (rev a1)

and the crash occurs with nvidia-current and nvidia-experimental of
Ubuntu 12.04, specifically 304.88 and also today’s 319 directly from the
NVIDIA website.

All recent Mathematica versions crash the X server, specifically

srecksie@cip1pavilion2:~$ more /mount/packs/Mathematica8.0.4/.VersionID
8.0.4.0
srecksie@cip1pavilion2:~$ more /mount/packs/Mathematica9.0.1/.VersionID
9.0.1.0

This happens with the standard 3.2.0-53/54 kernel but also with a 3.5 and a
3.8 that I tried.

I have also contacted Wolfram research about this because the only
way that I can crash the server is by starting mathematica, unlike
e.g. 567297.

Please tell me if there is any other information I can give to help
solve this problem.

Best wishes, Stefan, Techn.Univ. Munich

Please see the forum sticky posts about how to generate an nvidia-bug-report.log.gz file. Also, does the problem also occur with the latest 325.* and 331.* drivers?

If you can, please try starting the X server remotely via an SSH session to see if the server prints any additional diagnostic messages to the console that aren’t making it into the log file.

Dear Aaron,
sorry about my late answer, I only checked the thread for the first three or four days and then relied on the subscription function - which did not work for me.

Yes, the problem also occurs with 331. Please find attached the terminal output when starting X via ssh and the output of the bug-report script.

Thanks. It looks like the X server is crashing in some font-related code unrelated to the nvidia driver. Does the same crash occur with the “vesa” driver?

This looks like a known bug in the X server: 31501 – crash accessing font info with xfs in fontpath

Yes, the crash also occurs with the vesa driver. I used a xorg.conf which basically just has

Section "Device"
        Identifier "Configured Video Device"
        Driver "vesa"
EndSection

This way I can run mathematica and even make simple calculations. Unfortunately, the output of the vesa driver is broken on this chip (see attached picture), otherwise I would just be using the vesa driver on these systems (performance is not really an issue here).

Also, only these systems crash when starting mathematica. We have ~150 systems with other graphics adapters, lots of NVIDIAs, some others, and these are the only ones that give us these problems.

Terminal output of the vesa driver:

root@cip1pavilion4:~# X :1 -config /etc/X11/xorg-vesa.conf

Hi, I was having a similar issue with nVidia drivers causing X.org crashes when running Mathematica, Maya, Skype, and other applications.

The fix I found was to disable xfs, as per 31501 – crash accessing font info with xfs in fontpath. It appears that this combination of software leads to a known bug in xfs. If you are not using xfs to serve fonts from a centralized location, this may be an effective fix.

Hi, I now tried uninstalling xfs. Strangely this keeps X from crashing with 331.13 and 304.88, but the machine with 319.60 still crashes when Mathematica is started, although xfs is definitely not running and the machine has even been rebooted. Also, on the machines that do not crash, Mathematica hangs for about half a minute when starting, probably waiting for an answer from the xfs server.
Still, a workaround that makes the problem a bit more bearable for us, thanks!
(I still do not understand why the crash does not occur with the VESA driver - if the VESA driver had also crashed, I would have tried disabling xfs earlier, Aaron also pointed me to that bug.)
