Hardware timestamping not available on Marvell AQC113C

Good afternoon,
I want to use linuxptp to synchronise sensors with my NIC (Marvell AQC113C). When I run ethtool -T lan1, I get PTP Hardware Clock: 0, whereas the specs says the NIC is definitely supporting hardware timestamping.

The driver loaded is nvethernet from what I see in dmesg, could it be I have to use atlantic as it’s supposed to be the driver for this NIC.

Could you help me, please?

I tried to link the atlantic driver to my network interface in the device tree.

From your log, it seems something missing in the device tree for your AQR113C drvier.

Sounds like this issue is not yet related to any hardware timestamp things. The interface is not even working?

Interface is working as the intended speed (link speed is 10000), and I get the data of all my sensors (many cameras and lidars without any problems). The only thing I’m missing is PTP to synchronise them.

I’ll check with them, thank you, but apparently the board vendor didn’t change anything to the device tree configuration made for the dev kit.
They pushed me towards you when I asked for support.

What is the result of this command?

sudo ethtool -T eth0

Please change eth0 to MGBE interface name if iit is not eth0.

I tried to increase tx_timestamp_timeout to 10, then 100 and still getting that.

Does same method work if you use NV devkit?

On the dev kit I was using an external PCIe SPF card using the intel driver and PTP was working without any problem with this method, but I had PTP Hardware Clock: 1.

I’m still googling around, for a solution, apparently the NIC firmware could be the issue, do you have any idea on how to check the version and if it’s the wrong one. flash a newer one?

We are not able to answer you any question about the NIC fw. Please check with the vendor.

Also, we don’t have any interface for flashing their firmware by using jetson.

I found this issue lately, pulling master from linuxptp, and then running

sudo jetson_clocks
sudo ptp4l -i lan1 -f /etc/linuxptp/default.cfg -m

It worked without any issues through the night.

What does jetson_clocks do?

jetson_clocks is a tool used to set the static maximum frequencies of the CPU, GPU and EMC clocks.

This is no issue. This print only tells you that you find the relevant PHC at /dev/ptp0.

You can try our fork of the AQtion driver: GitHub - ctu-vras/AQtion: Aquantia AQC multigigabit NIC linux driver (atlantic) - development preview , devel branch. I’m working on it right now. In a few minutes, this branch should contain all the relevant fixes needed for both HW and SW timestamping working and it should be buildable on kernels 4.9 - 6.9 . I mostly tested with AQC107, which is Gen 1 chipset, while AQC113 is Gen 2 chipset. However, there’s a good chance my changes could help even with AQC113.

If you want, you can try without jetson_clocks and pass --tx_timestamp_timeout 30 to ptp4l. You’ll see if the problem is that there’s not enough waiting time for the stamps (which jetson_clocks could help with), or if it is the case that timestamps get lost totally (I guess the 30 ms timeout should cover most proper cases).
