How to add or change SSD on Jetson Thor?

Hello, I would like to add or replace the SSD on the Jetson Thor developer kit, but I couldn’t find any documentation or user manual about this. Does anyone have information on how to add or change the SSD on the Jetson Thor

There is no specific doc to teach how to do the replacement for SSD, but you can refer to below picture from
Jetson Thor Module Carrier Board Product Specification

to change the SSD at J103 location.

Turn off, unplug power.
Turn Thor over. In the open area, there is a large black heat sink that is toward the center of the Thor.
Standard ssd slot/size/screw.

Do not get one with a heat sink. It will not fit. look at the bottom of your Thor. Nvidia has a substantial metal heatsink that works well with the “SAMSUNG 990 PRO SSD 4TB PCIe 4.0 M.2 2280”. The silicon padding insulation also peals off of existing 1tb nvme drive and transfers to the new drive. I chose the 990 as it is pcie 4.0. That is same generation pcie as the oem western digital 1tb drive.

Here’s a post where other people discuss the ssd they installed in Thor

Thank you very much.

I have seen J103 but there was a block. I never thought that weird shaped thing would be a cooling thing. After careful evaluation I noticed ssd is under that block. That made me to confuse. There is a metal cooling block on it. I hope it is not going to harm my thor if I unscrew that block.

It will not harm Thor to unscrew the ssd with its mounted heatsink.

Do not separte the ssd from the heatsink unless/until you are going to then swap the ssd drive.

When you are swapping ssd drives you will want to remove the heatsink and the silicon putty from the existing ssd and move it over to the new ssd. The only tricky part for me was reinstalling the ssd drive screw as I didn’t have a magnetic tipped screw driver so it took a little while to install the screw.

do I need thermal thingy for that block? and I have exact ssd You have mentioned by luck. I am only scared to do anything mistaken. Do I need spare padding etc? I would be glad if there was a video tutorial for it.

When you move the heatsink from the old ssd to the new ssd, you should also move the existing thermal putty to the new ssd. Just don’t lose the screw.
