As I experienced with Isaac Sim 5.0, I can not get the included ROS2 navigation examples working with ROS2 Jazzy, regardless of different approaches like running natively, with Docker, or with build_ws.

Detailed Description

I’m trying to run the ROS2 navigation examples: Carter, iwHub, Hospital, Office. Works on this system with ROS2 Humble from Docker but does not work with Jazzy, even after resetting / reinstalling everything and trying 3 separate approaches:

  • ROS2 Jazzy running natively (without Docker, shared memory DDS)
  • ROS2 Jazzy running with Docker as described in the documentation, UDP DDS
  • ROS2 Jazzy built with Python 3.11 using special “Build_ws” workspace

The first 2 approaches almost work, but the global controller doesn’t see the costmap. The last approach does not launch, most modules load correctly with Python 3.11 dependency but importlib seem to be looking for 3.12 modules to import and therefore ROS2 doesn’t launch at all.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. verify system compatibility… everything passes, see screenshot below

  2. open a new terminal

  3. export isaac_sim_package_path=$HOME/isaacsim_5.1
    export ROS_DISTRO=jazzy
    export RMW_IMPLEMENTATION=rmw_fastrtps_cpp
    export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$LD_LIBRARY_PATH:$isaac_sim_package_path/exts/isaacsim.ros2.bridge/jazzy/lib
    $isaac_sim_package_path/isaac-sim.sh --reset-user
    
  4. In Isaac Sim, Window → Examples → Robotics Examples, then in the Robotics Examples tab, ROS2 → Navigation → Carter → Load Scene → Play

  5. open a second terminal

  6. export RMW_IMPLEMENTATION=rmw_fastrtps_cpp
    cd IsaacSim-ros_workspaces
    cd jazzy_ws
    source /opt/ros/jazzy/setup.sh
    colcon build
    source install/local_setup.sh
    ros2 launch carter_navigation carter_navigation.launch.py
    

Error Messages

In RVIZ, Controller → Local Costmap → Status: Warn → Message: No map received

Tried same with ROS2 running from Docker, same result. Even with including the following to make the DDS work with UDP instead of shared memory:

Also tried using the “build_ws” procedure:

Related Issues

Had same issue with Isaac Sim 5.0:

Since then, I downloaded the very latest Isaac Sim workspace, reinstalled ROS2, cleared caches, used the reset-user flag, and upgraded the Nvidia driver from 570 to 575. I also tried 580 in the past, it was unstable with crashes and CUDA error messages. So far, both 570 and 575 are stable.

Additional Context

Works with ROS2 Humble, no error message in RVIZ relating to costmap, and I can set a navigation goal and see the robot moving towards the goal both in Sim and RVIZ

As for your comments in Isaac Sim 5.0 ROS2 Navigation doesn't work with ROS2 Jazzy on Ubuntu 24.04 with latest updates - #19 by infox22oo, in the second terminal where you are launching the carter_navigation ROS2 node, you need to source python 3.12 build.

source /opt/ros/jazzy/setup.bash
cd IsaacSim-ros_workspaces
source jazzy_ws/install/setup.bash

Or you can run the ROS2 launch file in the docker.

And it almost works, but not quite. Specifically, here are the steps and results:

First, I build the Python 3.11 workspace as mentioned in the documentation:

cd IsaacSim-ros_workspaces

./build_ros.sh -d jazzy -v 24.04

There are no errors, at the end it says “successfully copied…”

Then in a new terminal I run Isaac Sim 5.1 referring to this Python 3.11 library (and not the internal library) with the following steps from the documentation:

cd IsaacSim-ros_workspaces
source build_ws/jazzy/jazzy_ws/install/local_setup.bash
export isaac_sim_package_path=$HOME/isaacsim_5.1
export RMW_IMPLEMENTATION=rmw_fastrtps_cpp

Now, in another terminal, as you suggested, I can run ROS2 Jazzy:

And the result looks like this with no purple areas in the main map, and if I position a navigation goal, nothing happens.

On this same Ubuntu 24.04 system, if I follow the steps in the documentation to use ROS2 Humble instead of Jazzy, it looks like this:

And in this case, positioning a new navigation goal has the expected result and the robot moves to the new location both in Sim and RVIZ.

So this is my issue… On Ubuntu 24.04 I have been able to run the Navigation examples with Humble but not Jazzy.

Sorry, I don’t know if you wanted me to type {local_costmap_topic} directly, or if you wanted me to substitute something. These are all totally unmodified examples from Isaac Sim 5.1 with the latest Isaac Sim workspace from Github, so if you’d like me to type a specific topic just let me know what exact to type or cut/paste into the terminal window. I don’t know enough about ROS yet to know what the local_costmap_topic should be.

No, when trying this in Jazzy or in Humble I just follow your documentation and click on the “Nav 2 Goal” tab at the top of RVIZ and then click somewhere on the map. Using Humble, the robot starts moving both in Sim and in RVIZ, but using Jazzy, nothing happens. I don’t do anything differently in Isaac Sim or RVIZ, just using different commands to start Isaac Sim with Humble libraries and then starting ROS2 Humble from Docker.

If you or the developers happen to have an Ubuntu 24.04 system with all latest updates applied, could you tell me the specific commands you type in each terminal to get any of the included ROS2 navigation examples to work ?

I should emphasize that the Ubuntu 24.04 system needs to be fully up to date. We think this was actually working with Jazzy until there was a wave of Ubuntu updates with hundreds of packages including a whole bunch for ROS2 but it was so many updates that we didn’t keep track of exactly what packages got updated. Eventually, Ubuntu’s automatic updater said “Your system is up to date”

Then the next time we tried Isaac Sim, we couldn’t get it to work with ROS2 Jazzy, regardless of whether we use it directly or with Docker.

It still works with Humble from Docker, as shown in the screenshot further upthread.

To review: these are the exact commands we cut/paste into each terminal:

Presumably, any Ubuntu 24 system that is fully updated as of today should have the exact same versions.

In the terminal, if you do ros2 topic echo {local_costmap_topic}, are you able to receive messages?

Assuming that instead of typing {local_costmap_topic} you wanted me to check in RVIZ to see what the name of the local costmap in your example is, and then type that name, here’s what I got.

Looking in RVIZ, I see the name of the local costmap of Nvidia’s unmodified example is apparently the following:

/local_costmap/costmap

So if I type your suggested command into a new terminal, nothing happens.

ros2 topic echo /local_costmap/costmap

No results, nothing shows up.

If I go back to ROS2 Humble, this is what I see in RVIZ:

If they are unable to reproduce the issue on an Ubuntu 24.04.03 system with all the latest updates, and if they can run Isaac Sim 5.1 ROS2 Jazzy navigation examples like Office, Hospital, Carter etc with no problem, I would appreciate if you could ask them for the exact series of commands that were issued in the terminal windows.

Any chance you could check with the QA team or dev team to see if either of them have been able to reproduce the issue ? And if not, would it be possible to get the exact commands they entered into the terminals to get Isaac Sim 5.0 or 5.1 to work with ROS2 Jazzy on Ubuntu 24.04 after all the Ubuntu and ROS updates have been applied ? Our team was unable to reproduce the issue using our setup (Ubuntu 24.04, ROS2 Jazzy, Isaac Sim 5.1 GA, RTX A6000).

You’ve mentioned applying all the latest updates several times. Just to clarify: did you notice the problem start after a specific update, or does the issue persist even on a clean install without recent system or ROS2 package updates? If the behavior changes depending on the update status, could you share which updates (e.g., system, driver, ROS2, Isaac Sim) seem related to the problem? This info would help us better narrow down the cause.

@VickNV , thank you very much for checking with the team. Based on this reassurance that Isaac Sim 5.1 is really expected to work with Jazzy, I decided to do a complete removal and re-installation of Isaac Sim 5.1, the workspace, and ROS2. TLDR: Now it works, thanks so much.

If anyone else runs into this, here’s what I did:

Uninstalling ROS2 Jazzy according to ROS2 Jazzy documentation):

sudo apt remove ~nros-jazzy-* && sudo apt autoremove

Deleting the Isaac Sim 5.1 workspace:

sudo rm -r IsaacSim-ros_workspaces

Deleting Isaac Sim 5.1:

sudo rm -r isaacsim_5.1

Reinstall Isaac Sim 5.1:

unzip isaac-sim-standalone-5.1.0-linux-x86_64.zip -d isaacsim_5.1
cd isaacsim_5.1
./post_install.sh
./clear_caches.sh
./compatibility_check.sh

Reinstall Isaac Sim 5.1 workspace:

Note that reinstalling ros-jazzy-desktop did not work without the update/upgrade, so the updates are mandatory at this point. And this updated the kernel yet again, now to 6.14.0-36

Also note that as described in the Isaac Sim 5.1 documentation, ros-jazzy-topic-based-ros2-control needed some manual installation steps until the rosdep was satisfied.

After this, I built the workspace with colcon as described in the documentation and then I followed the above command sequence:

And wow, this time it worked, for the first time on my Ubuntu 24.04 system natively with ROS2 Jazzy without using ROS2 Humble Docker . I was able to move the Nav2 Goal and the robot moved as expected and reached its destination. Again, thanks. We can close this case now.
