Jetson Nano does not boot after upgrade

I updated and upgraded the OS on a standard Jetson Nano with SSD. I then rebooted, the NVidia screen came up, it started booting and then stopped, and became unresponsive. Is there some way I can recover this?

Hi paulthanlon,

Are you using the devkit or custom board?

Could it boot up success before? Or boot up w/o external SSD connected?
Could you also provide the full serial console log for further check?

As far as I know it is the Devkit (bought from Mouser) two years ago. I used the JetsonHacks way of setting up the SSD, and I didnā€™t have any issues with it. I also have a 5v 4A power supply which hasnā€™t had any issues either. First time I tried to update and upgrade, I had an issue, but because I hadnā€™t loaded much up, I updated the SD Card instead and rewrote it to the SSD and everything worked fine.

I updated and upgraded this time around because a program I wanted to install needed a newer version of CMake, and anyway, it was time to upgrade. It went smoothly, I followed the recommended actions when prompted, and was told I had to reboot. So I did, and that was the result. It started in the usual way, and then just stopped, with those errors shown on the screenshot.

This time around, just upgrading the Micro SD card is not really an option as I have put a lot of programs onto the SSD, all of which worked fine, but took a lot of time to set up.

When this happened, I turned off the Jetson, and backed up my home folder on another PC, so there isnā€™t any corruption of the drive as far as I can see. Other than that, I went through the forum, but I could not find another issue that was the same.

Any help you can give me would be great, as I am actually in the middle of doing something with it right now, and I really donā€™t want to have to go through the hours and hours of setting everything up again.

Sorry, just saw the last part of your post. Where could I find the full serial console log. I should be able to connect the SSD to another computer, and retrieve it from there.

How did you do this? What issue did you get?

and this?

You could refer to the following link for capturing serial console log.
Jetson Nano Style - Serial Console - JetsonHacks

And at first, I would suggest you to backup your SSD content.

Updating and Upgrading.

I updated and upgraded the normal way on most Linux systems. I typed in sudo apt update, typed in my password, and waited for it to get the latest repositories. Then when that finished I typed in sudo apt upgrade. It downloaded a lot of programs and installed them.
There were three prompts asking me if I wanted to overwrite some programs that were already there. The recommended action was to not overwrite. I canā€™t remember which programs this happened on, but I took the recommended advice and typed in N(No) to continue. Everything loaded up, or seemed to. A dialog popped up on my screen to reboot, so I clicked the restart button on that dialog. It shut down, it started back up, I got the initial NVidia screen then it raced through the first screen, and stopped on the second, with the output in the photograph.

Updated SD Card then transferred to the SSD Card.

This was ten months or so ago. I updated and upgraded in the same way as above, it too crashed, so I downloaded whatever was the latest version of Jetpack (I think 4.5) onto my SD Card, copied the root filesystem over to the SSD, and made the changes in the boot config file to point to the root filesystem on the SSD drive, and got back up and running that way. And it worked fine from there.

Serial console log.

The article you pointed me to says that the Jetson Nano uses a PL2303 chipset, the cable it links to uses a SiLabs CP2012 chipset. There is also the FTDI chipset and another one, I think it is the CH341 chipset. Which one does the Jetson Nano use? If it is not the FTDI chipset, Iā€™m going to have to buy a new cable to get the serial log output, which is going to take some time to get to me.

Backing up.

Well, Iā€™ve already backed up my home folder. There really isnā€™t any point in backing up anything else, as it would be backing up a system which doesnā€™t work. From my experience with Raspberry Pis and some other SBCs, once youā€™re at the point where your relying on serial log output to fix something, it usually means you end up having to start all over again. Let me know which cable I need, Iā€™ll order it up and get back to you.

OK,
I took a chance and tried the serial cables that I did have. Weirdly, I was able to login using minicom, but it just halts when trying to boot it up on the machine itself. This is the output from the serial console

Just some reminder.

  1. You can attach your log in either a text file or use a block to put it in. It would be easier for others to read.

block

  1. Your dmesg is truncated. Each line got cut in half.

Thatā€™s strange. It looks good to me. I have to go in to work for a while. When I come back, Iā€™ll stick the outputs in text files

please also share me the result of ā€œlsmodā€.

Hi there,
This is the output of lsmod

paul@paul-desktop:/proc$ lsmod
Module Size Used by
paul@paul-desktop:/proc$

Iā€™m also attaching 3 files
The raw output from dmesg
The /proc folder
modprobe -c output
You might be able to parse what modules are loaded from the last two files
proc_output.txt (18.5 KB)
modprobe_-c.txt (4.9 KB)
dmesg-r.txt (57.2 KB)

Looks like nvgpu driver is gone even after modprobe.

Without nvgpu driver, gpu wonā€™t be able to workā€¦

Could you check if there is nvgpu.ko in your /lib/modules?

Hi there,
This is the output from looking. It looks to be there but buried deep in the folders

Iā€™m really sorry. I had almost no sleep last night, so Iā€™ll have to come back to this tomorrow morning

It looks like the cause of this issue is clear now.

  1. uboot loads the kernel file from your mmc device (either emmc or sdcard). And the kernel version is still version <=32.7.2.

Err: serial
Net: No ethernet found.
Hit any key to stop autoboot: 0
switch to partitions #0, OK
mmc1 is current device
Scanning mmc 1:1ā€¦
Found /boot/extlinux/extlinux.conf
Retrieving file: /boot/extlinux/extlinux.conf

  1. Your /lib/modules has been upgraded to rel-32.7.3 and system still tries to search the path /lib/modules/{uname -r} for the module. But there is no compatible version inside of it.
To be more clearā€¦ your ā€œuname -rā€ shows kernel version 4.9.253 but your /lib/modules only has 4.9.299. Thus, nvgpu driver would not be loaded. Without nvgpu driver, your display/graphic wonā€™t work.

Hi there,
Yes, I can confirm this. uname -r returns 4.9.253-tegra. Well spotted
What would happen if I were to change
/lib/modules/4.9.299-tegra/kernel/drivers/gpu/nvgpu/nvgpu.ko
to
/lib/modules/4.9.253-tegra/kernel/drivers/gpu/nvgpu/nvgpu.ko
That directory is writeable by root, so I could just change it.
But would that affect other things the kernel is doing.
Also what would be likely to happen on the next update?
Where is the kernel being told to look for 4.9.253-tegra?
Could that be changed?

Please refer to this document. Change the boot order in the uboot so that uboot will try to load kernel from SSD instead of emmc.

https://docs.nvidia.com/jetson/archives/l4t-archived/l4t-3261/index.html#page/Tegra%20Linux%20Driver%20Package%20Development%20Guide/flashing.html

NVMe as example

ā€¢ To set NVMe to boot first with a plain boot command, change the Uā€‘Boot variable boot_targets to ā€œnvme0 mmc1 mmc0 usb0 pxe dhcpā€, then enter the Uā€‘Boot command run boot.
ā€¢To make the change permanent, run saveenv in U-Boot after changing boot_targets but before booting

If your SSD is based on usb, then need to put usb0 in highest order.

Sorry, youā€™re going to have to be more specific than that. 99% of that long document doesnā€™t apply to this problem, nowhere in that document does it say whether the files that have to be changed are stored on the SD card or on the USB drive, and nowhere in that document does it state what folder I have to be in to run some of these scripts.

For instance, one of the files mentioned was ./flash.sh, never stating what directory it is actually in. Doing a find on the whole file system, including the SDCard turns up nothing.

You yourself use NVME as example. There is no NVME on this machine. How about giving me an example for USB SSD and telling me where the file is stored that I have to change.

Thereā€™s a further problem. initrd.img is a link that points to the actual initrd.img, which is

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 24 Sep 19 09:27 initrd.img ā†’ initrd.img-4.9.253-tegra

Surely that should be initrd.img-4.9.299-tegra, otherwise it is just going to create problems further down the road. This is on both the SD Card and the USB Drive.

Iā€™ve managed to get all the python modules loaded up on a proper machine so that I could hit the deadline for the project I was doing on the Jetson Nano, so I now have a bit more time to look at this properly, but please donā€™t waste it.
