  • Do you have any custom partitions or block devices connected, e.g., external hard drives?
  • Have you edited "/etc/fstab"?
  • When this does work, is there any difference in what peripherals you have attached?
  • When boot succeeds, what do you see from "lsblk -f"?

NOTE: When this fails it appears the rootfs is already successfully mounted. The message seems to refer to blocking when a filesystem cannot be mounted (a filesystem other than rootfs).

All of the entries with “mmcblk0” should be without the “tq” prefix, but I have not worked with the “i” version, so maybe this is actually valid. Or, possibly it is just some artifact of copy and paste. Can you verify if the “tq” of “tqmmcblk0” actually exists like that, or if instead it is just related to the copy and paste?

This is an interesting case since it seems the partitions are correct and the partition type really is ext4, and yet at times there is a problem where the partition type is not considered a compatible extX type. I have to conclude that something is going wrong with the actual data read.

I do not know what would cause a hardware error and cause a corrupt read since most such hardware errors tend to be permanent and not intermittent. However, I have one last experiment to see what is going on…

In a case where the system boots correctly, monitor “dmesg --follow” over serial console so that you can log even during a failure. Then simply read and throw away the bytes from the disk like this (I’m hoping that if something is wrong dmesg will print a message):

sudo dd if=/dev/mmcblk0 of=/dev/null bs=4096

You could repeat that a few times if the first attempt does not produce any errors or logging. All this will do is read the bytes on the disk and throw the bytes away without doing anything. The “bs=4096” is just a block size…larger tends to be faster, but buffers more in RAM, while a “1” would be a single byte read at a time without any buffering. Technically the test would be better with a “1”, but would be much slower.

An alternative test to do the same thing:

sudo cat /dev/mmcblk0 > /dev/null

Solid state memory does sometimes start failing and will remap using spare memory, and I’m wondering if perhaps this is going on (but most such errors will show up under write, and less often under read…during boot it is reading). RAM buffering disk activity also can cause problems, but the amount of RAM in use at the moment of first reading the partition is probably fairly low, and if that memory region in RAM had gone bad, then more often than not it would always fail (RAM does sometimes work intermittently, so this isn’t a guarantee, e.g., with inadequate power delivery for the RAM).
