Only some Jetson Nanos work on my custom carrier board

I’ve designed a custom carrier board for Jetson Nano, but some Jetson Nanos won’t work on it. Some work fine, but some won’t even boot.

I was wondering what I could have done wrong, and here are my questions:

  1. Pin 240 (SLEEP/WAKE): I left it open. Didn’t add a pullup to 5V on it. Should I’ve put a pullup on it even though I don’t use this pin? Also pin 239 (SYS_RESET) and pin 214 (FORCE_RECOVERY) are left open. I just connected them to a connector with no pullups or anything else.

  2. On pins 124 and 212 I didn’t add pullups. They’re simply GPIO02 and GPIO10, but on the NVIDIA development kit carrier board they have signals BT_M2_WAKE_AP and M2_E_ALERT with pullups. Should I’ve added those pullups? Note also that I left open all pins from GPIO00 to GPIO07 and GPIO09 to GPIO13.

  3. Searching the forums for a solution to this problem I found this post: Jetson Nano module not working on custom carrier board - Could this be the problem? Jetson Nanos that come with the development kit won’t work on custom carrier boards? Strange that all Jetson Nanos I’ve tested on my custom carrier board came from the NVIDIA development kit.

Hi, please confirm your power up sequence is similar to below one in Design guide. And you can check your design based on the items one by one in the checklist sheet attached in the Design Guide doc.

I checked with the oscilloscope all those signals, and when I power on my custom carrier board first VCC gets to ~4.961V. Then, SHUTDOWN_REQ goes high also to ~4.961V at the same time VCC goes high. About 350ms later POWER_EN is set high by the custom carrier board, with all decoupling capacitors fully charged and VCC stable. But SYS_RESET is then expected to go high after some time, but it stays low. Never goes high, even a minute later.

Note that some Jetson Nanos will work fine on my custom carrier board, but some won’t. All of them will work on the NVIDIA carrier board that comes with the development kit. My custom carrier board holds 4 Jetson Nanos, and it’s the same result in all 4 slots: some will work fine, but some won’t even power up.

EDIT: I tried changing the time POWER_EN goes high after VCC=5V to 1ms, 2ms, 5ms and 10ms but still same result: SYS_RESET stays low and Jetson Nano won’t boot.

No clue got. You may need to check your design carefully since some works while others not. Did you check the checklist sheet one by one?

Well, I reviewed the checklist and this is what I assume:

For power on (to get SYS_RESET=1), all I need is to wait for a stable 5V within tolerances (so my 4.961V is fine), then set POWER_EN high, and finally wait for SYS_RESET high to turn on all other supplies (3.3V, 1.8V, etc).

I am indeed not connecting SYS_RESET to the EN pin of my 3.3V and 1.8V regulators. But since only 1.8V goes to the Jetson Nano pins, I removed the 1.8V regulator to see if SYS_RESET would go high. But still it doesn’t.

I also saw on other posts that there’s a new requirement for a minimum of 400ms between VDD_IN and POWER_EN=1, so I changed a resistor on my custom carrier board to set this delay to ~1s. Still, no SYS_RESET.

My custom carrier board only uses:

  • SPI0 pins
  • FAN_TACH (pin 208) and FAN_PWM (pin 230) pins
  • Ethernet pins (GBE)

All other pins are left open except for the power pins (VDD_IN and GND pins), POWER_EN (pin 237) and SHUTDOWN_REQ (pin 233). So, is there anything else I could have missed that is preventing SYS_RESET to go high after POWER_EN=1? Note that with the 1.8V regulator removed, the SPI0/FAN pins are not driven.

I found the problem that was causing SYS_RESET to stay low. It was simply a PCB design mistake making the signal not go to the proper pin on the connector. Sorry about that.

Either way, the main issue remains where only some Jetson Nanos will work on my custom carrier board. But I managed to build a serial interface to convert UART2_TXD to RS232, and here are the debug output of the Jetson Nano that won’t work on my custom carrier board but will work on NVIDIA’s kit:

I see this warning about bad CRC near the end. Is this something that could be the issue?

PS: I also see this “Hit any key to stop autoboot” at the end. But UART2_RXD is left open on my custom carrier board. So, it could be receiving noise, which is “any key”.

Actually you don’t need to ask whether CRC error is related to this issue.

As you said you have devkit, you can just put that module to devkit and see if you also see such error.

I am not sure. But previous error one which “stops” the boot process looks more like you hit a key to stop the auto boot.

Yes, that was exactly it. The UART2_RXD was left open, floating. So, on some Jetson Nanos it would not receive noise, and progress normally through the boot. But on others UART2_RXD would receive noise, and that noise would act as a key being hit at that part, stopping the autoboot. So I tied UART2_RXD to GND and the problem stopped.

Question: Is it possible to disable this “Hit any key to stop autoboot” via software, or by any setting on the Jetson Nano?

Pulling to ground is not good. The default level on an UART is a logic high. Pulling high to 1.8V would be a better option.
