RTX 5060 Ti / Linux: DP-MST daisy-chained monitors not detected during boot with driver 595.84

System

  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5060 Ti 16 GB

  • Driver: 595.84, Open Kernel Module

  • OS: Ubuntu 26.04 LTS

  • Kernel: 7.0.0-30-generic

  • Desktop: GNOME 50.1, Wayland, GDM

    nvidia-bug-report.log.gz (323.7 KB)

  • Connection: RTX 5060 Ti → DisplayPort → Samsung monitor with MST enabled → DisplayPort out → Dell monitor

  • Both monitors use 2560×1440; Samsung at 75 Hz and Dell at 60 Hz

  • nvidia_drm.modeset=1 and nvidia_drm.fbdev=1

Problem

The two daisy-chained monitors are not detected when Linux initializes the NVIDIA driver during boot.

Both monitors briefly show the BIOS and Ubuntu splash screens. They then become completely black. There is no mouse cursor or GDM login screen, but the system continues running normally and remains accessible through SSH.

The problem is reproducible after every reboot. Sometimes the upstream DisplayPort cable must also be replugged after a cold start.

There is a delay of approximately 24 seconds between loading nvidia-drm and the “Failed to get dynamic displays” message.

DRM state after the failed boot

card1-DP-1: disconnected
card1-DP-2: disconnected
card1-DP-3: disconnected
card1-HDMI-A-1: disconnected

No EDID data or display modes are available.

Forcing connector detection through sysfs does not help:

for s in /sys/class/drm/card1-DP-*/status; do
echo detect | sudo tee "$s"
done

All connectors remain disconnected.

Physical hotplug result

Disconnecting the DisplayPort cable between the GPU and the first monitor for about ten seconds and reconnecting it causes two new dynamic connectors to appear:

card1-DP-4: connected
EDID: 256 bytes
Modes include: 2560x1440

card1-DP-5: connected
EDID: 256 bytes
Modes include: 2560x1440

The mouse cursor can then be moved across both monitors, but both backgrounds remain black because the already-running GDM session does not display the login screen.

Restarting GDM restores both monitors completely:

sudo systemctl restart display-manager

After that, the login screen appears and both monitors work normally in the GNOME session.

Reliable reproduction

  1. Boot or reboot with the DP-MST daisy chain connected.

  2. Both monitors show the firmware and Ubuntu splash screens.

  3. Both monitors become black when the NVIDIA driver initializes.

  4. Connect through SSH.

  5. All DRM DP connectors are reported as disconnected.

  6. Writing detect to the connector status files has no effect.

  7. Physically disconnect and reconnect the upstream DP cable.

  8. New DP-4 and DP-5 connectors appear with valid EDIDs and modes.

  9. Restart GDM.

  10. Both monitors work normally.

Expected behavior

The NVIDIA driver should enumerate the two DP-MST displays during device registration and make them available to GDM without requiring a physical hotplug.

Actual behavior

DP-MST enumeration times out during NVIDIA driver initialization. The monitors become available only after a real DisplayPort hotplug, which creates new dynamic DRM connectors.

An nvidia-bug-report.log.gz captured after reproducing the failed boot and recovering the displays is attached.
