I use Jetson AGX Orin and Ubuntu22.04 laptop.
After added 1TB M2.SSD to the Jetson, I tried to re-install Jetpask to SSD with SDK Manager, but “The connected Jetson device is not ready for flash.” pop-up message was displayed.
Jetson is recovery mode, and connection between laptop and Jetson is no-problem.
How can I solve this problem?

To solve the issue of “The connected Jetson device is not ready for flash” when trying to re-install Jetpack to an SSD on a Jetson AGX Orin device using SDK Manager on an Ubuntu 22.04 laptop, follow these steps:
- Ensure the Jetson device is in recovery mode: You’ve already confirmed this, but it’s essential to ensure the device is in recovery mode for the flashing process to work.
- Verify the connection between the laptop and Jetson: You’ve also confirmed this, but make sure the connection is stable and not causing any issues.
- Check the SSD: Ensure the 1TB M2.SSD is properly connected to the Jetson device and recognized by the system. You can check the SSD’s status using the
lsblkcommand on the Jetson device. - Disable automount: As mentioned in the requirements section, automount must be temporarily disabled for the new external storage device during flashing. Run the command
systemctl stop udisks2.serviceon your Ubuntu 22.04 laptop to disable automount. - Install required dependencies: Ensure the host (your Ubuntu 22.04 laptop) has the necessary dependencies installed. Run the command
sudo apt install libxml2-utils simg2img network-manager abootimg sshpass device-tree-compilerto install the required packages. - Use a high-quality USB-C/micro-USB cable: As mentioned in the requirements section, a low-quality cable may cause the flashing process to fail. Try using a different, high-quality cable to connect the Jetson device to your laptop.
- Try flashing with
flash.sh: Instead of using SDK Manager, try flashing the Jetson device using theflash.shcommand. This command is used to flash the Jetson device with the root file system, kernel, and bootloader. You can find theflash.shcommand in the Jetpack installation directory. - Check the
boardenvironment variable: Ensure theboardenvironment variable is set correctly on your laptop. This variable should match the Jetson device you are trying to flash. You can check theboardvariable by running the commandecho $board. - Check the
root_pathsetting: Ensure theroot_pathsetting is correct and points to the root file system of the SSD. You can check theroot_pathsetting by running the commandecho $root_path. - Try flashing with
l4t_initrd_flash.sh: If the above steps do not work, try flashing the Jetson device using thel4t_initrd_flash.shcommand. This command is used to flash the kernel on the Jetson device.
By following these steps, you should be able to resolve the issue and successfully flash the Jetson device with the SSD.
Comparison with other methods:
- Using
flash.shinstead of SDK Manager can help resolve issues related to the flashing process. - Using
l4t_initrd_flash.shcan help resolve issues related to the kernel flashing process. - Disabling automount and installing required dependencies can help resolve issues related to the flashing process.
Additional information:
- Make sure to follow the instructions carefully and ensure all the requirements are met before attempting to flash the Jetson device.
- If you are still facing issues, try checking the Jetson device’s logs for any error messages that may indicate the cause of the problem.
This might work
“nvme0n1” or “nvme1n1” whichever is correct. Following will erase all data on it.
sudo parted /dev/nvme0n1 --script mklabel gpt mkpart primary 0% 100%
Then run sdkmanager again
I executed the command on Jetson then tried SDK Manager again, but the same error occurred.
When I checked the terminal message on SDK Manager, the following message was displayed.
08:48:10 ERROR: [ 0.4100 ] ERROR: might be timeout in USB write.

What does “timeout in USB write” mean?
I can check that Ubuntu laptop recognizes Jetson as USD Device by lsusb command.
Disable autosuspend on host PC with below command:
sudo echo -1 > /sys/module/usbcore/parameters/autosuspend
Plug out the USB cable, put jetson back into recovery mode again and plug the usb cable back.
I ran below command insteadly:
echo -1 | sudo tee /sys/module/usbcore/parameters/autosuspend
The command resolved timeout error, and finnaly I successed to install Jetson Linux to SSD on Jetson.
Thank you for your great help!
