Trying to Install Ubuntu 20 or 22 on Jetson Nano 2GB

Hello,

I tried installing Ubuntu 20.04 or 22.04 on my Jetson Nano, but it didn’t boot or got stuck at the NVIDIA boot screen. I noticed that the latest NVIDIA developer kit version is 4.6.1, which is based on Ubuntu 18.04.

Are there any plans to release an updated version of the NVIDIA Toolkit newer versions for Jetson Nano, or will support for the device be discontinued?

Also, has anyone successfully forced an installation of Ubuntu 20/22 on this? Any workarounds or additional insights would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks.

Keep in mind that there isn’t an actual BIOS in a Jetson, that this is entirely done in software (equivalent to a BIOS). When you flash you are also flashing the equivalent of the BIOS. This boot chain was only developed up to L4T R32.x, which is Ubuntu 18.04. The compatibility matrix is here:
https://developer.nvidia.com/linux-tegra

The older Nanos are “TX1” generation, and no longer have new features developed. Ubuntu 18.04 (L4T R32.x) is the newest you will be able to find.

Probably not the answer you want, but to get to 20.04 you need Xavier or Orin. Even the TX2 is not able to go past 18.04. Orin can go to 22.04, but Xavier cannot. I don’t know when, but there will be a new Jetson model sometime “soonish” (there is a metric-imperial conversion issue there! 😃). No doubt whatever this next model is will be more portable since UEFI is fully implemented in L4T R36.x (Ubuntu 22.04) and might perhaps allow a newer Ubuntu (nobody has said this, but it seems logical from past releases that this next generation will have a more portable boot chain and be able to work with a wider range of releases).

JETPACK 4.X = UBUNTU 18.04 || JETPACK 5.X = UBUNTU 20.04

JETPACK 4.X only received bug and security updates(Ubuntu 20.04 on Nano? - #6 by hpc88323)

If you want to use Ubuntu 20.04 you will have to buy a newer Jetson compatible with JETPACK 5.X(Jetson Software Roadmap for 2H-2021 and 2022)
