TX1 Freezes After Boot

I have a Jetson TX1 dev kit which has been freezing intermittently for the past few months, but now has gotten to the point that it freezes consistently within 5 mins of boot every time, and is unusable. I have attempted to flash the board with the most recent Jetpack (as of this message), but this fails during the support package installation process. It therefore appears that it is also freezing during this installation process. I was able to get the HDMI display working before I re-flashed it, but it would only allow me max of 5 mins after logging in before it would freeze and stop responding to commands. I was also not able to access the device remotely via SSH, as it was unresponsive.

I would appreciate any help you could give on this. Thank you.

This may be an actual hardware failure in need of RMA, but if you have a serial console cable this would probably be able to show exactly what is going wrong (serial console works even when video and networking and much of the system are completely gone). Normally I would think perhaps we are talking about something going into power saving mode, but this should never happen during a flash. There is also a possibility that one of the USB peripherals can cause the failure, but that serial console is needed to know more. You could open a terminal and run “dmesg --follow” to perhaps catch the final output before the failure (the idea being that the screen will be left frozen at its last value), but if the system truly freezes there may never be a log message.

So it seems that the issue is USB related, and I believe the xudc message implies this is related to the micro-OTG port (this port can act as a device or host, and when acting as a device the “gadget” interface is used…it is the “gadget” code which puts out this message when it is xudc).

Try booting with nothing connected to that micro-USB connector (and in fact don’t plug anything at all into USB until it finishes booting, then plug it in one item at a time).

Check the pins of the micro-USB connector for bent or broken pins (both the socket and anything plugging in to the socket).

If the above does not help I believe this is a case in need of RMA. The information above matches the idea that there is a lockup even during flash since it is the micro-USB connector in device mode which is used for flash. This also says that unfortunately the keyboard or device being plugged in to the connector is probably not at fault unless there is a cable which is used in common for both flash and any attached devices.

LinuxDev, we did not have anything plugged into the USB ports. This was just a bare dev kit with an ethernet cable plugged in. The kernel panic is captured here:

It looks to me like this might be an issue related to performing USB DMA transfers via the Realtek 8152 network interface while power management tries to change states.

I see smmu_iommu in there a lot, and invalid mode. It makes me think something is corrupt. This could indeed be hit during DMA, and any USB-to-ethernet would be high on the list of where this code could be called.

If this is the integrated NIC it might be time to RMA. Are you able to complete flash if you don’t install extra packages (extra packages are not actually part of flash)? What L4T version is on this (“head -n 1 /etc/nv_tegra_release”)?

If you have anything at all connected to the board which might touch USB (and some non-USB slots make USB available…it isn’t limited to a discrete USB connector) then you may have found the trigger source.

If you cannot flash due to this, then you probably must RMA. If this were purely something from detachable peripherals and software which could be avoided during a flash I’d say flash again. For testing purposes, if you can flash, do not install any extra packages. Test with network down (e.g., something like “sudo ifconfig eth0 down”). Testing might be with continuous read and/or write to a USB hard drive or with a USB dongle other than the integrated NIC.
