TX2 Dev kit always loss power few minutes after startup

Hello,

I got a tx2 a month ago, and I used it to control a racecar VESC controllor. I flash it with jp4.2 and install ROS melodic. Nothing goes wrong untill two week ago, I left it running in office and the next morning after that day when I get back office ,it had shutdown, and can not be started up by pressing BTN sw ,neither does the Recovery Mode. Finally, I end up doing RMA. The day before yesterday, I had recieved a new(looks like a new one) TX2 atfer RMA. I redid those setup work yesterday, and left it trainning perception model all night. This morning when I came, found it shutdown and cannot startup. Then I unpluged the power supply wait the CR5 LED turned off and pluged into the power, it can be powered on but would loss power in minutes. After that I have tried :

  1. use different power supply lines->doesn’t work
  2. use different socket and outlet->doesn’t work
  3. set power mode to m0(pnvmode -m 0)->doesn’t work

This is The video: Jetson tx2 自动断电_哔哩哔哩_bilibili ,around 21:40 in the video it loss power.

Enverionment: using a SATA HP SSD 500G disk, a FOCBOX VESC speed controllor, Jetpack 4.2 + ROS melodic + tensorflow-gpu 1.13

could anyone help me?thx!

Hi, several questions about this: what’s the meaning of “would loss power in minutes” ? Does it mean not power on again or power up afterward? Do you have the log record when this happen? Did you test without any external device attached and with default sw loaded?

Hi Trumany,
“loss power in minutes” ,mean exactly what you say. Only CR5 LED is on , and if pressed BTN at that moment, CR6 , CR1 & CR2 LEDS would flash, but it can’t power up successfully. After unplug the power till CR5 turns off, and plug it in, tx2 can be powered on successfully by pressing BTN.

I have tried powering it on without any external device ,but it doesn’t work at that time. Now the tx2 continues running with all external devices without any shutdown-event for 2 hours. I don’t know what have happened.

This is the syslog when auto shutdown happens.

ergouu,

What is “jetson_clocks.service”?

Hi, WayneWWW, Thanks for your reply.

It seems to be part of the ZED driver process which I have installed. So I try to execute it, and find that it is the same as “/usr/bin/jetson_clocks”, I have checked it ,it is not a link file. Do you have any suggestion?

Jeston clocks is a binary file that could pull cpu/gpu/emc frequency to maximum and also disable the power saving features.
You only need to set jetson_clock once in the beginning when system boots up.
I don’t think it is a good behavior to keep setting the the jetson clock while your application is running. According to your log, the system also shuts down when the service is again running.

I think you need to find out why does this service keeps running.

OK, I get it . I have already stoped the service by executing “service jetson_clocks stop” ,then I checked the syslog and there is no such logs any more. Finally, execute “systemctl disable jetson_clocks.service” to prevent it from startup when system boots up .
Hope it works.

But I don’t know why this application keep setting the jetson clock, I think it is just a driver for ZED camera, and I download it from its official website https://download.stereolabs.com/zedsdk/2.8/jetson_jp42 and its plug for ROS GitHub - stereolabs/zed-ros-wrapper: ROS wrapper for the ZED SDK

Thanks for your advice, WayneWWW.

It doesn’t work I think, because the TX2 just shut down automatically a moment ago.
And one more thing is the FAN doesn’t spin ,the temerature of the CPU/GPU is 40C, is it normal?
I look up the DG document, the default threshold is 51C. So it’s normal.

Here is the syslog when the system crashed:

The TX2 auto shutdown several times after stop the jetson_clocks.service.

Notice two things:

  • Once the TX2 shutdown automatically I never boots up the system successfully without disconnecting the power supply though the CR5 LED is on.
  • If I didn't unplug the power cable from power jack immediately ,I must disconnect power firstly and have to wait a few minutes before reconnect it to boots it up ,or nothing happens while pressing the power button
  • And this morning ,after a few minutes running, it suddenly appears information on the screen like this and shutdown automatically in seconds

Have anyone meet the same problem?

    Thanks.

I think Zed might maximize clocks because it is sensitive to USB3 not providing all of the bandwidth the camera needs.

I see as soon as LVM2 kicks in (which default installs don’t use) the filesystem becomes unreadable. The interesting thing is that sysctl echoes to to “/proc/sys/” also fails (and “/proc” is a driver interface without real files, so it should be immune to eMMC issues):

Is this a stock kernel, or was it modified? What is the output from:

    uname -a
    head -n 1 /etc/nv_tegra_release

…sorry, I know this won’t work if you can’t boot far enough, but I’m hoping serial console will have part of that.

I guess it may be the jetson_clocks.service that cause the system crash. And the crash or something else damaged some sensitive parts. Though, I stop the service after that crash, tx2 has already been damaged and began to auto shutdown again and again.
I don’t think it is an occurrence. It happens twice in succession.
And in the pic I post , this info also said tx2 has some hw problems.

    vdd-1v8: voltage operation not allowed

LVM2 is not default installed in jp4.2, I use apt-get to install it.
I didn’t modify the kernel, it is original.
    Here is the result.

I use LVM on the external ssd disk. Actually, every time it shutdown automatically, the data of the running process in system is damaged, which means the data in the memory has not written into the disk yet.

I can’t put my finger right on the cause, but it is obvious the filesystem is not responding. There is a very high chance this is related to the LVM2, and for testing purposes you might consider disconnecting the external disk. Overall you are losing the ability to read or write to all filesystems…not just eMMC, but also pseudo filesystems.

I could see the possibility that something is going on with the hardware such that it is being driven to a point of high temperature, and then fails under higher temperature, but this only seems low probability.

I have done RMA today, so I can’t do that test now. But, I still want to find out what happened.

Why does sysctl tried to write these files every beginning of boot before the Kernel Module been loaded?
I think because this action is before the Kernel was loaded, these file doesn’t exist at that time instead of the filesystem’s problem.
And if the LVM2 caused the overall filesystem unreachable at the beginning of the boot, I think it is not possible to boots up the OS successfully.

I have done that before. I removed all the external devices including the ssd disk and umounted all the lvs & vgs to observe weather tx2 would shutdown automatically again .And it does.

According to the tegrastat log, the temperature of the sensors are below 35C when the system crashed, not too high. Why did you think so?

Some kernel parameters are intentionally exposed for setup as the system boots. This is the “sysctl” setup. It allows fine tuning things like network setup without hard coding for a specific setup. The content of “/etc/sysctl.conf” is for example a way to echo into that content. Some of the prefix directories are left out of the syntax in the file, but refers to “/proc/sys” prefix. “tcp_syncookies” is one example for protection against TCP SYN flood attacks.

The important thing is that the files in “/proc” are pseudo files, which live in RAM, and are a result of kernel drivers…these are not real files. Now if the eMMC failed to respond, then I would still expect pseudo files to work if it was just a hardware failure (an exception would be if drivers had to be loaded from disk to work, and the disk was not accessible…often this is taken care of via an initrd…a mini minimal initial filesystem with the right drivers so U-Boot itself doesn’t need to read the actual device…the initrd is just a compressed tarball loaded to RAM without needing to understand LVM2). This isn’t the case though, so I suspect it is a software failure. LVM2 could in fact have been added such that it interferes with hardware drivers, and this in turn could cause both pseudo file access and eMMC access to both fail.

LVM2 by itself should not cause such a failure, but if you use LVM2 as the rootfs, then U-Boot cannot understand this and this would be a cause of failure. Before U-Boot (or any bootloader) can hand off to the Linux kernel it has to find the rootfs…U-Boot presumably does not have LVM2 drivers or any means to understand this. The combination of GRUB and BIOS/UEFI on a desktop PC offers quite a bit more in terms of universal understanding of various devices than does U-Boot, but even on a desktop PC not all distributions support “/boot” or “/” on LVM2.

Overall I am thinking that how LVM2 was used would need to be investigated to actually point out the issue, and LVM2 is high on the list of “probably the cause”, but that’s just guessing without something to test.

I didn’t use LVM device as the rootfs.
After I got tx2, I flashed the tx2 OS on the eMMC with JP4.2, then I reboot it to connect the SSD disk with SATA cables. And I use “vgscan” and "vgchange -ay " to activate the file system in the SSD disk , and then activate the lvs on the vg, and never put all those raw device(like mmcblk0*) into the LVM management.
LVM is not used as overall block device management software. I used LVM because the external disk was formatted by it and I don’t want to loss the data in it .

    Hi,

I think it is little bit early to file a RMA. You could still flash your board with pure jetpack and see if it would have this auto power off issue. If it still shuts down, then it is a hardware issue.

If it is not, I would guess the 3rdparty driver causing the trouble.

Also, these two are not error message.

    vdd-1v8: voltage operation not allowed
    sdhci-tegra 3440000.sdhci:could not set regulator OCR (-1)

Actually, I tried to flash tx2 again and it auto shutdown in Force Recovery Mode. The flashing process was interrupted, so I do RMA, and it is already on the way.

Thanks for checking. If there would be new TX2, please do remove the Jetson_Clocks.service from systemd first. Currently, there are still not enough clues to narrow down the root cause.

Hi WayneWWW, I have stoped that service already, and it doesn’t work.
