Ubuntu does not start normally after flashing to eMMC

I used flash.sh for the eMMC of jetson nano B02 and flashed it, and after completing the system settings when launching ubuntu, ubuntu cannot be operated.
What is the cause?
I want to flash without using SDK Manager.

Flash procedure

  1. Download and unzip v32.5.1 “L4T Driver Package (BSP)” and “Sample Root Filesystem” on the host machine
  2. Run “sudo ./apply_binaries.sh” on “<your_L4T_root> / Linux_for_Tegra / rootfs”
  3. Launch Jetson nano in recovery mode
  4. Connect host machine and Jetson nano via USB
  5. Run “sudo ./flash jetson-nano-emmc mmcblk0p1” on the host machine (successful)
  6. Exit recovery mode and restart jetson nano

Thanks.

hello k-irisa,

you could use the flash script to flash JetPack image download by SDKManager.
for example, it’s default path ~/nvidia/nvidia_sdk/JetPack_4.5.1_.../Linux_for_Tegra/

Btw, you could log the flash.sh output during the flash, although if it said flash was successful, it probably wouldn’t reveal much. What it could reveal though (even if successful) is something like an odd partition size for the rootfs. If you do flash again with that command, then I’d suggest logging:
sudo ./flash jetson-nano-emmc mmcblk0p1 2>&1 | tee log_flash.txt

If things have failed to boot after a valid flash, then you need a serial console boot log to see what is going on. See:
https://www.jetsonhacks.com/2019/04/19/jetson-nano-serial-console/

If you use any kind of monitor other than a true HDMI without adapters, the it could be the monitor failing rather than the system not booting. Serial console boot logs would probably mention this.

hello JerryChang.

Thank you for answering.
I will try.

Thank you for answering.
I got the serial console log.
Do you know what the problem is?
There is a system configuration log on the last line, but the system configuration is completed on the GUI, but no more logs are output.

[ 10.463969] Please complete system configuration setup on desktop to proceed…

What GUI did you use to configure this? Does the log you shared come from before or after you finished the configuration ?

This is the system configuration GUI when ubuntu is launched for the first time.
This log did not change before and after the configuration started.

And what does the GUI look like now if you boot up the device?

After the configuration window is closed, the desktop screen (Beaver) remains and the icon is not displayed.
I can click the power off button on the top bar with the mouse, but it doesn’t power off.

It sounds like previous configuration is not correct. Please reflash the board and try again.

I’ve flushed it many times and I get the same result.
Is the configuration setting wrong?
The settings are the same as the SD card.
Or do I need to configure the file system before flushing?

If you flash it many times and they all get failed, it probably means your driver package is corrupted or missing file.

I would suggest you can use sdkmanager instead of preparing driver package by yourself first.

It’s best to use SDK Manager, isn’t it?
I will try.

However, it seems to be a problem that ubuntu fails to start even though it can be done with a flash script.
If the downloaded driver package is damaged, I would like you to fix it.

Thanks.

I think you didn’t get what I meant…

Sdkmanager is also using the flash.sh.
But it installs the package automatically. Your previous setup is a manual setup. Maybe something gets broken during your setup steps.

Thus, use sdkm first to prevent such error.

I don’t know if the above is part of the issue or not, but if there really is a device tree error I would not be surprised with this being part of the issue. I just don’t know if this is relevant to your case.

The rest of the log looks good, and it notes it is waiting for first boot account setup.

Incidentally, as an extension of what @WayneWWW mentions, if you were to start with a clean host PC directory under the relevant “~/nvidia/nvidia_sdk/JetPack...version...”, and flash once with SDKM (you can deselect adding optional packages and do that another time), then this will set up the correct flash content in “~/nvidia/nvidia_sdk/JetPack...version.../Linux_for_Tegra/”, and you could then flash on command line and know the “Linux_for_Tegra/rootfs/” content is correct. There are some extra steps if you want to manually install the “Linux_for_Tegra/rootfs/” content, and SDKM performs those steps for you.

I downloaded it with SDK Manager and flashed it with "Linux_for_Tegra/rootfs/" and it succeeded.
Thank you for your help.
