Unable to access BMC on IGX Thor T7000 to upgrade to Thor 2.0

I have an IGX Thor T7000 dev kit that I am attempting to bring up to the most recent software release (2.0, Thor) and I cannot connect to the BMC to get started.

Current Firmware version: 38.3.0-gcid-43153445

Current Kernal Version: Linux 6.8.0-202512091939-nvidia-tegra-ppadev-rt

The following is the steps I have taken so far:

Followed the set up instructions to set the ubuntu host machine with static IP 192.168.1.1 with its ethernet interface connected directly to port 5 (MAC address 3c:6d:66:a4:2f:cb). The Thor devkit only shows the OS interface ip and not the BMC - I can login as a user but not as root and the webui is not served on the only IP that shows running a nmap 192.168.1.0/24 command from the host.

I attempted to remedy this by following instructions to configure my Host as a DHCP server since I was coming from an older version. I did this successfully (and had both network ports connected with an assigned IP) but no dice in having the BMC ip reveal itself and could still only ssh into the OS via either ip.

Finding this documentation about default network setup I wondered if somehow the network configuration got wiped as this file was not present on my devkit. After adding this file with eth0 and eth0:s Network adapter (the BMC port 5 is enP1p4s0 on my box) it does in fact show the static 192.168.1.110 in an nmap scan but this still has no BMC access - I can login to the OS via ssh user@192.168.1.110 but not ssh root@192.168.1.110 and no webUI was being served at http://192.168.1.110.

In a final hope to reset the BMC I tried to follow the BMC factory reset instructions but there are no IPMI devices found in the IPMI folder so the command fails with Could not open device at /dev/ipmi0 or dev/ipmi/0 or dev/ipmidev/0: No such file or directory and sure enough there is no files or folders in the ipmi directoy.

Any guidance or further steps to get connected to the BMC or checking if the BMC is running and active?

Hi elisha.oldenburg,

It looks like 192.168.1.110 may currently be reaching the Tegra/OS side instead of the BMC.
That would explain why you can SSH as a normal OS user, but not as root, and why the BMC Web UI is not available.

Please try the following:

  • Remove the manual 192.168.1.110 configuration you added on the devkit Linux side.

  • Connect your host directly to BMC port 5 only.

  • Set the host NIC to 192.168.1.1/24.

  • Re-test with:

    • ping 192.168.1.110

    • ssh root@192.168.1.110

    • https://192.168.1.110 in a browser

Also, please use HTTPS for the Web UI.
The missing /dev/ipmi0 on the Tegra side does not by itself confirm that the BMC is down.

Hello Kevin,

I did already attempt those steps following the initial instructions but following them again leads to the same result show below.

I connected the ubuntu host’s enp59s0 to port 5 on the Thor devkit and removed the static config file on the devkit.

Results from the host box:

No BMC response, no webui connection.

Since the host is already set to 192.168.1.1/24 and 192.168.1.110 is still unreachable, this now looks like a lower-level BMC/link issue rather than an SSH or WebUI issue.

Please try a full AC power cycle and test again with only the direct cable to BMC port 5 connected.
If it is still unreachable, we should move to BMC/board-level recovery checks.

Hello Kevin,

Is is a photo of the connections to make sure I am setting it up correct. Some places I read the USB-C connection as port 5 but the documentation always follows up with clarifying with the right most RJ45 ethernet connection.

After power cycling, fully powering off Thor for ~15 mins and restarting and waiting ~5 minutes below are the results. Still with the BMC being unresponsive.

Is the ethernet cable connected between IGX Thor devkit and the host PC directly?

In addition, can the IGX Thor boot successfully?
It seems the display DP cable is connected on your board.
