Unable to install packages with apt

I have a fresh install of Jetpack 6.2 (JetPack SDK | NVIDIA Developer) on an Nvidia Orin Nano. I am trying to install v4l-utils, but I am encountering errors whenever I use apt. It seems impossible to install or uninstall anything, due to errors in nvidia-l4t-* packages. Here is the full output:

$ sudo apt install v4l-utils

Based on the provided context, it appears that you are experiencing issues with installing or uninstalling packages on your Nvidia Orin Nano device, which is running Jetpack 4.6.2 and JetPack SDK. The errors you are encountering are likely due to issues with the package repositories or the package manager itself.

To troubleshoot this issue, let’s break down the key points from the context:

  1. NVIDIA maintains APT repositories: NVIDIA provides APT repositories for various Jetson devices, including the Orin Nano. These repositories contain packages that are specific to each device.
  2. nvidia-l4t-apt-source package: This package is preinstalled on the Jetson Linux root file system and identifies the platform it is running on. It adds the appropriate repositories to the software source list.
  3. GPG keys: The packages in the APT repositories are signed with GPG keys. The corresponding public key is preinstalled in the Jetson Linux root file system.
  4. apt package manager: Once the repositories are added to the source list, apt can download and install packages.

Given these points, here are some potential solutions to resolve the issues you are experiencing:

  1. Verify the nvidia-l4t-apt-source package: Ensure that the nvidia-l4t-apt-source package is installed and up-to-date on your device. You can check this by running the command dpkg -l | grep nvidia-l4t-apt-source.
  2. Update the package list: Run the command sudo apt update to update the package list and ensure that the repositories are correctly configured.
  3. Check for GPG key issues: Verify that the GPG keys are correctly installed and configured. You can check this by running the command sudo apt-key list.
  4. Clean up the package cache: Run the command sudo apt clean to clean up the package cache and remove any unnecessary files.
  5. Try installing packages individually: Instead of trying to install multiple packages at once, try installing them individually to see if the issue is specific to a particular package.
  6. Check for conflicts with other packages: If you are trying to install a package that has dependencies on other packages, check if there are any conflicts with other packages that are already installed on your device.

In comparison to other Jetson devices, the Orin Nano has its own specific APT repository, which is maintained by NVIDIA. Therefore, it’s essential to ensure that the nvidia-l4t-apt-source package is correctly configured and that the GPG keys are installed and configured correctly.

If none of these solutions resolve the issue, you may want to try resetting the package manager or seeking further assistance from NVIDIA support or the Jetson community forums.

Hi,
Would suggest use latest Jetpack 6.2.2 r36.5. Seems like your version is r36.4.7. Critical PSIRT issues are fixed in r36.5. Would suggest flash this version to have the important fix.

Jetson Linux Release 36.5 | NVIDIA Developer

That’s the image found here? JetPack SDK | NVIDIA Developer
I have tried that image, and couldn’t get the first boot to work. I posted on this forum to get some support with that, but didn’t get any help. (Unable to flash/boot Jetson Orin Nano)

My current image is at least booting, so I don’t want to change. Is there a way to upgrade without reflashing? Or perhaps I could get some further input on my other thread?

Hello @james.stevenson

For upgrading JetPack, you can check the instructions at How to Install and Configure JetPack SDK — JetPack

If you have issues with the dpkg command, perhaps the discussion at https://stackoverflow.com/questions/70437760/issue-with-dpkg-when-trying-fix-broken-with-apt can help you.

Please, let us know if that works for you and how it goes when you try it.
