Hi guys,
My computer has randomly decided to stop running the X server for reasons that I don’t understand. I am running Fedora 20 and use the kmod-nvidia package from yum to update my graphics driver.
This problem wasn’t due to an update, or anything else I can work out. I simply started up Linux one day, and this started happening. I have since done a full yum update in which the kernel and nvidia drivers were updated, and reinstalled the kmod-nvidia and xorg-x11-drv-nvidia packages, and manually installed the latest driver from the website instead, all to no avail.
I have been quite good at solving these problems in the past, but now it seems to me that it’s well beyond my abilities to work out what’s happening. Basically, when I am in multi-user mode/runlevel 3 and run startx
, the screen is black for about 3 seconds, at which point I am then returned to the command-line with no error, just messages saying that the X server has quit. Here is Xorg.0.log:

The only detail of significance that I’ve found is in the tail of dmesg:

[ 36.958418] nvidia 0000:06:00.0: irq 93 for MSI/MSI-X
A quick Google of “IRQ 93 for MSI/MSI-X” came up with nothing at all, so I don’t know what to make of this if it isn’t a hardware error, however I’m still perfectly fine playing games on my Windows dual-boot. It seems completely stable.
If you need any more information, please let me know. Thanks!
EDIT:
There is actually something of significance that has happened that I’ve just thought of, I cleaned my computer out. Basically, I get a vacuum cleaner and a can of compressed air and remove dust from heatsinks, fans and filters. I don’t spray onto circuit boards because, AFAIK, fast-moving air can cause static to build up.
I’d be surprised if I have damaged the graphics card, as I can run a FurMark stress test and it seems stable. The temperature reaches a max of 78 Celsius. Any ideas?
Thanks
