550.40.07 - REGRESSION - Can not drive 4 240hz 1440p monitors

Hi,

I have been testing the 550.40.07 on Arch based distro. While loading into my desktop environment (after SDDM), I will get black screens on all my monitors.

Distro: Arch
Kernel: 6.7.1
GPU: 4090 RTX

If I use only 3 monitors 1440p @ 240hz, the desktop appears again. Somehow there is a limitation on those drivers…

If I switch back to the 535.154.05 drivers, the issue disappears.

Thanks.

Is your desktop running in Xorg or Wayland? If it’s Xorg, can you please enable verbose mode validation logging by adding

Option "ModeDebug"

to the Device section in /etc/X11/xorg.conf, restart your session, and then run sudo nvidia-bug-report.sh and attach the resulting bug report log? It would be helpful to also get a bug report from 535.154.05 for comparison.

535-nvidia-bug-report.log.gz (874.5 KB)
550-nvidia-bug-report.log.gz (1.1 MB)
550-nvidia-bug-report-BLACKSCREEN.log.gz (1.3 MB)

I was able to create debug report even with the monitors totally blacked out (they went in sleep mode): 550-nvidia-bug-report-BLACKSCREEN.log.gz

The 550-nvidia-bug-report-BLACKSCREEN.log.gz is the report with only 3 monitors.

The 535-nvidia-bug-report.log.gz is the report with 4 monitors running normally.

Hope this helps!

Hey again, just installed the 550 stable and I can report the bug is still there…

@aplattner How can I help?

Thanks

Just to touch base after doing a lot of test on my machine, I noticed that card with the 550 series drivers seems limited to run this setup:

Display (ROG XG27AQM): 2560x1440 @ 240Hz
Display (ROG XG27AQM): 2560x1440 @ 240Hz
Display (ROG XG27AQM): 2560x1440 @ 240Hz
Display (AVT GC553G2): 2560x1440 @ 144Hz

With this configuration, X11 or wayland start. If I increase the refresh rate from 144Hz to 240Hz on the last monitor:

Display (ROG XG27AQM): 2560x1440 @ 240Hz
Display (ROG XG27AQM): 2560x1440 @ 240Hz
Display (ROG XG27AQM): 2560x1440 @ 240Hz
Display (AVT GC553G2): 2560x1440 @ 240Hz

I get a black screen until I unplug one of the monitor (the black screen is not related to any of the monitor but rather to the total amount of the refresh rates).

The behavior is the same on both X11 and Wayland. I would rather stay on X11 until the explicit sync / tearing / GSync on multi monitor situation is fixed on Wayland. With different refresh rate monitors, the experience is subpar with X11.

Please let me know how I can help.

Thanks.

Thanks @A1RM4X for sharing the logs.
I have filed a bug 4513881 internally for tracking purpose.
I will also try to duplicate issue locally and shall get back to you if required any additional information.

Thank you very much for taking this bug in consideration.

@A1RM4X

Does the issue reproduce if you load ‘nvidia-modeset’ with the parameter ‘hdmi_deepcolor=0’ ?

I just loaded this parameter hdmi_deepcolor=0 for testing via:
1 - kernel module parameter
2 - modprobe

Both black screened (monitor go into sleep mode) while adding a 4th monitor at 240Hz 1440p. I am using the Driver Version: 550.78

Hope this help.

Edit: re-posted for clarity, last answer was confusing.

Just a heads up: the bug is not longer present in the 555.42.02 drivers version.

Thanks for fixing it!
