Boot up failure after Ubuntu upgrade (Snappy Daemon & Light Display Manager)

Hello,

I tried to upgrade ubuntu from 16 to 18.04, when I finished I rebooted the machine and it seems to be failing on boot up. Two errors are being thrown:

  1. Snappy Daemon
  2. Light Display Manager

Here is what I did:

Ran Debian upgrade process from:
https://yuncloud.ddns.net/wordpress/blog/2018/05/22/how-to-upgrade-ubuntu-to-18-04-lts-bionic-beaver/
Things were running, but got kicked to a login screen, could not log in.
Left it running, tried reboot.
Booted up with the previous two errors.

The Ubuntu mechanism for release upgrades will not work since it has no concept of drivers for this hardware. If you used the Ubuntu mechanism, then you’ll need to flash again. Currently the L4T R31.1 is only for Xavier, but chances are good that the next release with Ubuntu 18 will also include the TX2.

Although @Linuxdev gave very few hope for your case (and almost sure he’s right…you won’t get correct nvidia drivers this way), if you want to fight for glory and are ok for wasting some time:

Snappy deamon error may be related to kernel not supporting squashfs:

gunzip -c /proc/config.gz | grep CONFIG_SQUASHFS
# CONFIG_SQUASHFS is not set

You may rebuild your kernel enabling it.

For logging:
If you use a non US keyboard, you may try to use it as a qwerty keyboard. When I boot without display and connect it later, it is seen as a qwerty keyboard, and will be correctly set only after the session has started.
You may also try to clear compiz cache from console:

sudo rm -r /home/administrator/.cache/compizconfig-1

Also check you have some free space on rootfs:

df -H -T

I am new to Linux programming and Ubuntu, so sorry if I am not clear enough to describe my problem. Yesterday, I tried to upgrade Ubuntu from 16.04 to 18.04 on my Jetson TX2, it all worked well until it rebooted. Then I got the same error, [Failed to start Light Display Manager].

(I have literally no clue what went wrong or what this error means. I am on the learning stage just like a child when learning ABCD.)

It would be grateful if someone can guide me through this issue.

Did you use the SDK Manager to do the upgrade? Or did you use the Ubuntu mechanism? The Ubuntu mechanism will fail since it has no understanding of the custom hardware. SDK Manager 4.2 understands the hardware and is the method for flashing Ubuntu 18.04 (a.k.a., L4T R32.1 when NVIDIA-specific support is added).

Note that embedded systems do not have a BIOS or UEFI. This means all of the boot support a PC motherboard has is instead custom software on an embedded system.

I used the Ubuntu mechanism. I got a dialogue box saying “Do you want to update Ubuntu to 18.04?” And I as a dumbf pressed yes without knowing the mechanism behind it (I thought its similar to Windows). Now I know why it doesn’t work, thanks to you.

Now I tried updating from Jetpack 3.3 to Jetpack 4.2 with SDKManager 4.2 (from a host with Ubuntu 18.04), but I can’t get past Step 3, because it says “Could not detect Nvidia Jetson device connected to USB” [lsusb doesn’t show Nvidia Corp.]. I tried both, Automatic setup and Manual setup, but it gives the same error about connection (yes, it was in forced recovery mode for manual setup, still it doesn’t detect jetson). Not sure what is the problem now and what can be done about it.

Any suggestions?
Downgrading to 16.04 and then try updating Jetpack 4.2? Or uninstalling and reinstalling SDK from SDKManager?

That particular Ubuntu release upgrade dialogue mechanism is dangerous in the embedded world. What it should really say is “would you like to break boot?”. Ubuntu should know better, but has allowed the desktop PC world to leak into the embedded world. Perhaps this upgrade detect and announce mechanism is itself a package, and could be blacklisted.

The TX2 flash requires the micro-B USB cable be used, and that the TX2 be in recovery mode prior to starting flash. If you hold down the recovery button while either applying power or resetting power, then the TX2 becomes a custom USB device.

Many charger cables don’t work right with data, so be sure to use the original micro-B USB cable supplied with the TX2. Also, a VM mostly fails to work correctly with USB unless the device has been correctly configured from the parent o/s to give complete ownership of the device to the VM.

If you’re using the correct cable, no VM is used, and the Jetson has been put in recovery mode, then “lsusb -d 0955:7c18” should have output. If not, then it may be a hardware failure.

Thanks for the reply! I noticed it was a faulty micro-B USB cable. I couldn’t find the original one from devkit but I found an original micro-B USB cable. For the connection via USB, it works, it now shows “Nvidia Corp.” after “lsusb -d 0955:7c18”.

I am not using VM, I am using a host Dell laptop on Ubuntu 18.04. I have seen two ways to put Jetson TX2 on recovery mode: 1) following instructions as per SDKManager, turning ON the Jetson TX2, pressing the forced recovery button, pressing the reset button, while the forced recovery button is already pressed and after 2 secs releasing the button; 2) power ON the jetson, while the forced recovery button is already pressed and then press reset and release the forced recovery button. Don’t know which one is correct, I tried both, but now it has a new problem after it starts flashing for about 5-10%.

Following is the terminal log, if you can suggest what’s wrong. It says “lost connection”, but how? There is nothing to hinder the connection. Not sure if Ethernet should be connected or not. I had tried it with Ethernet port connected to a W-LAN router.
