SDK Manager - Could not detect target hardware

Hello,

I can’t flash my Jetson TX2 with the SDK Manager, I always get this error :
“Could not detect target hardware
Please make sure the target hardware is connected and is in recovery mode, click OK and RETRY.”

My host is under Ubuntu 16.04.
My TX2 is in recovery mode. The usb cable is connected from the TX2 to my PC.
My host and the TX2 are connected on a switch with access to the internet.

Hi Dakow,

Could you try plug usb cable to other usb part and put your device into recovery mode again?
Make sure you can see below device in host ubuntu:
$ lsusb

I’m having the same issue, albeit with a different board: I’m trying to flash a Xavier board with the SDK manager and I get the same message. At several attempts the program loses connection after it is ~14% done:

Just FYI, if anyone is using a VM (which isn’t supported), then this is a common problem for the case of lost USB (VMs don’t handle this correctly in most cases, though you might be able to tweak settings). If anyone is using a VM, then try a native install. If not a VM, then there is something which might be debugged.

In the case of the package addition stage (which is after flash completes and the system has rebooted), then only wired ethernet is supported (WiFi is not supported from the Jetson side). Manually set up WiFi could work, but this cannot be automatically set up during a flash. Do keep in mind that you can run the package management stages without flashing if you uncheck flash and manually enter the IP address of the Jetson (the USB cable is not required for this).

@linuxdev: thanks for the clarification, it is very helpful to get a more detailed understanding of the install process.
Having said that, I am not using VM, I am trying to do the flash from a Ubuntu 18.04 laptop, with wired ethernet on both the laptop and the Xavier. My guess is that it is an issue wih the 4.2 SDK manager, because one of our engineers in Europe ran into the same issue over there on two different systems as well. He couldn’t get it to flash with 4.2, so he went back to 4.1 where he was finally able to do it.

Not an ideal situation though, because 4.1 and 4.2 have a different dir structure etc. and we’d like to keep it consistent across boards even in the lab. It’d be awesome if we could get this to work under 4.2 - is there anything we can do to help with the troubleshooting? Log files, config files, etc?

I do not yet know enough to help much with SDK manager. One bit of information which might matter though is which of the failing machines used a locale other than “en_US.UTF-8” (see “echo $LANG”), and if there were spaces anywhere in any paths used for install.

Since SDK manager is brand new, we did not modify the install path, but went with the proposed default. Also, we used US English for all machines.

  1. Put the device to recovery mode
  2. Go to BSP folder (that you download target HW image folder)

I had the same issue today when flashing Jetpack 4.2 onto Jetson TX 2 through SDK Manager 0.9.11.3405 running on host PC with Ubuntu 18.04.2 LTS.

In short, install python 2 (sudo apt-get install python) and restart SDK Manager(probably the host PC as well).

P.S.
If you want to flash more than one boards:

  1. Make sure to restart the SDKmanager before flashing a new one;
  2. After Systemconfiguration, the board will reastart automatically, do not change anything on the newly flashed Jetson System(especially system settings, which may crash and, as a result, SDK flashing may fail) before finishing flashing SDK to the board by host PC.

Perhaps you can try the following command to flash L4T. It won’t work any better, but will emit some more debug information that might let us tell better where the problem is.

Are you sure that the Jetson device was in recovery mode when you ran that command? Every time you run flash.sh you must force the device back into recovery mode by holding the “REC” button either while powering on Jetson from off, or while resetting Jetson by pressing the “RST” button. It is quite possible that Jetson was correctly in recovery mode, it’s just that you’re seeing the same issue that prevents SDK Manager and flash.sh from working.

Can you also try this, also in the Linux_for_Tegra directory, with Jetson freshly placed into recovery mode again:
sudo ./bootloader/tegrarcm_v2 --uid

If that doesn’t print anything that looks like a useful error message, then perhaps try this too, after again placing Jetson into recovery mode afresh:
sudo strace ./bootloader/tegrarcm_v2 --uid

I get the same problem too. I could flash the device when I upgraded from lower Jetpack version to 4.2 version. But since then, I cannot reflash anymore.
I can confirm that my device is in recovery mode properly (I check with lsusb and the TX2-connected display doesn’t show Linux boot).
