Date and time defaults to Sun Jan 28

Does anyone know why is it that the date and time default to Sun Jan 28th on reboot?

I don’t have the ethernet connected and instead, it should be using the RTC + battery backup to retain calendar clock, but it doesn’t. Is this a defected board?

There is no backup battery, though I think there is a super capacitor. The NTP protocol for setting time from the network would be needed if the super cap isn’t doing the job.
