Device mode stopped working

Hi,

I have a Orin NX 16GB running in a devkit carrier board.
Until now, the device mode was working fine and I could connect via SSH to 192.168.55.1.
But after one or two weeks in the box, I started to work on the Jetson again, and now the network interface is not working on the Jetson.

If I plug the Nano on the same carrier board, it’s working fine, but on that Orin NX it stopped working.
I tried to flash the NVMe from scratch, but no luck. I tried to connect to another PC, but same result.
The USB-C cable is OK since I can flash it, and device mode is working with this cable with the Nano module.

When I plug the USB cable, I see nothing in dmesg (on the Jetson and on my PC).

Service nv-l4t-usb-device-mode is successful and usb0 and usb1 interfaces are created, but no IP is assigned when plugging the USB-C cable to the PC.

What else can I check?

I tried to flash the NVMe from scratch, but no luck.

What does that mean no luck? Flash failed or flash succeeded but USB port is still not working?

And what Nano are you talking about? Orin Nano?

I mean that device mode is not working, flashing is working fine.

Let me try to explain the situation better:

  • I have a Orin Nano devkit (carrier board+module).
  • I have a Orin NX 16GB module.
  • I can flash successfully Orin NX installed in the devkit carrier board.
  • Device mode is not working on this Orin NX anymore, it worked before with the same NVMe (what happened? I don’t know yet).
  • If I install the Orin Nano in the carrier instead of the Orin NX 16GB, the device mode is working fine, so the carrier board itself is OK, I did this test without changing the NVMe neither flashing it.

Please share the dmesg of your board with Orin NX.

Also, is the host mode of usb port still working or not?

And this comment does not make sense at all. It sounds like the software on this board was for Jetson Orin Nano all the time. Orin NX and Orin Nano still have difference. They are not going to work perfectly if just using another module without flashing.

The NVMe was flashed for NX, not for Nano.

This is clean system (original sample rootfs), flashed on Orin NX 16GB.

Will your Jetson dmesg get anything printed when you hotplug the type C cable?

nop, neither on the jetson dmesg neither on the PC dmesg.

But when I plug a USB drive with a USB-C adapter, the USB drive is recognized correctly, even without stopping nv-l4t-usb-device-mode service.
It’s as if it was in host mode all the time.

I know the cable is OK, since I use it to flash the Orin NX, and device mode is working with another jetson.

Could you flash your whole board with jetpack5.1.3 and do the test again?

OK I can, it will take a while. I’ll let you know the result.

I’ll have to do it manually since SDK Manager requires Ubuntu 18 or 20 for JP 5.1.3.

Let me try the same commands for 6.0, just to confirm it works or not…

This makes me crazy… I flashed with JP 6.0 and USB device mode is working back!

Then I switched the NVMe with the one where it didn’t work (where I have all my development environment). And it’s working back too with that untouched NVMe.

I have no idea what could have happened, I even didn’t touch the USB cable, as if the flashing of 5.1.3 did something…
