First time bootup of Jetson Orin Nano using SD Card

Board: Jetson Orin Nano 8GB Developer Kit
Firmware: 36.4.3
Image: jetson-orin-nano-devkit-super-SD-image_JP6.2.1.zip
Setup: Out-of-the-box fresh board setup using an SD card. Both a display and serial console are connected.

Description of the Issue:

The board boots up but immediately drops into a recovery/emergency kernel boot instead of the standard target. It seems to hang during the oem-config phase.

On the connected display, an error dialog box appears indicating an unrecoverable error, and both the keyboard and mouse completely lock up.

Key Symptom & Observations:

  • Mismatch in root target: The kernel command line shows root=/dev/initrd instead of pointing to the SD card.

  • Configuration checked: I verified /mnt/boot/extlinux/extlinux.conf on the SD card, and it correctly specifies root=/dev/mmcblk0p1. The bootloader appears to be ignoring or bypassing this file completely.

Has anyone run into L4TLauncher forcing a Recovery Boot out of the box on JetPack 6.2.1 images? Any pointers on why UEFI/L4TLauncher is bypassing extlinux.conf on the SD card would be greatly appreciated.

Had to perform the configuration below:

  1. Navigate to: Device Manager \(\rightarrow \) NVIDIA Configuration \(\rightarrow \) L4T Configuration.
  2. Look for OS chain A status (or a similar boot mode toggle).
  3. If it says Unbootable, change it back to Normal.

After that, connected the to the Jetson via a USB-C from my MAC to complete the configuration.

The board is fully booted at this time
