Jetson Orin Nano kernel panic when inserting USB WiFi adapter

The previous thread on this got closed while I was away and not able to test this on JetPack 5.1.2

We have updated to this latest version and when we attach a WiFi adapter (in this case a CanaKit that we’ve used with the Jetson Nano and Xavier NX and had no problem). Others have seen this issue as well.

This is the output of the serial connection as soon as I attach the device. (It lets you attach initially as long as nothing is setup to auto connect to a network. As soon as you put the password for the WiFi and it attempts to connect, it starts the path to kernel panic shortly)

Wayne, that is the post that I referenced when I made this post, up above that you must have missed. Something is still broken. I use this same WiFi adapter on Jetson Nano and Xavier NX with no problem.

What I wanted to say is we have some patches mentioned on that post. Is your result based on adding that patch or not?

We tried the patch on the previous Jetpack as the new one wasn’t out yet (when it was posted) and we were still getting the kernel panic. We did not apply the patch to the newer jetpack release.

Could you share the full dmesg since boot and also after hitting this issue?

Also, please post the patch you added in case you added something wrong.

Do you want us to retry the patch on 5.1.2 before collecting the data?

You can tell us what is the “patch” you added and how you updated the kernel so that we can make sure you are not wasting your time…

I was able to work around some of these wifi-related kernel panics by disabling bgscan in wpa_supplicant.

Quite some time ago on an older build. We modified the source then just rebuilt everything and reflashed everything to the SDCARD. We saw differences in the DMESG output at that time when we tried it.

That said, it’s likely we should retry on 5.1.2 since we spent a lot of time on other issues and are just coming back to this (just got back from a trade show demoing our prototype).

I don’t see any bgscan references in the wpa_supplicant files we find on the Orin Nano. Also, our panics always, it is not intermittent. If I plug in the WIFI adapter, it never connects. It says it is trying to connect and then just kernel panics. I’ll post the dump after this.

@WayneWWW, we took at a look at 5.1.2 and we see the patch is already applied in the latest Jetpack so there is nothing for us to change.

Interesting. We use this same WIFI USB adapter on the XavierNX and Jetson Nano and have no issues at all. Who manages the driver? (So we can try and inquire there).

Notice that when I plug in the unit after I boot, I get the other set of errors (that I pasted in an earlier message).

Actually I do see the same messages before that paging request.

@WayneWWW I spent time talking with the linux kernel support and they have indicated that the problem code is something Nvidia has changed upstream. To quote their response:

Here is the issue. We send the frames with spin_lock taken, in such
case no sleep (i.e. schedule() call) is allowed. Some function from
tegra/nvhost is actually sleeping, hence the bug.

As already pointed Thorsten, those tegra_/nvhost_ are proprietary functions,
which are not included in the upstream linux kernel, so we can not fix them.

However I can advice you to detach those from crypto_aead_encrypt,
this should be doable. At worst your will need to recompile your
kernel with those crypto offload engines disabled, but perhaps
this can be configured dynamically.

I have not tried to make this change yet to see if it fixes the problem at least for now.

Could you point out what patch is that?

I am unsure. I shared with linux kernel dev group all outputs from serial output and dmesg for both cases (booting up with WIFI USB plugged in, or with plugging it in after system has come up). Autoconnect was setup in both cases.

Their response is from the messages shown. It’s not clear to me exactly where the updated code is, but spares to be part of crypto code maybe involved with WPA.
