Jetson TX2 does not boot after flash

I made an image from my Jetson TX2 with Jetpack 3.3, since this is the jetpack version of the Jetson TX2. Then I took the image and flashed it with the same Jetpack version to a new Jetson TX2. The flashing process worked absolutely fine, but when I try to boot the new Jetson TX2, it hangs in the NVIDIA start screen and I’m not able to connect to SSH.

What kind of things do I have to consider when I flash a new Jetson TX2 with an older image?

There are dependencies between boot content and part of the rootfs. On the other Jetson did you also flash with JetPack3.3/L4T R28.2? If so, then it should have worked. Basically your bootloader worked up until it tried to hand off to the Linux kernel, and then it stops, and so nothing could execute from the kernel code, or else the kernel was never found. If you are trying to use an older rootfs with a newer JetPack/SDK Manager, then failing would be expected.

I took this tool to find out which Jetpack Installation was used: https://github.com/jetsonhacks/jetsonUtilities
Then I used this Jetpack version with the SDKManager 1.0.1 to take the image and then flash it using this commands:

How far does the SDK Manager version relates with the Jetpack? Shouldn’t the version of the SDK Manager be independent of the Jetpack’s?

There are also two different versions of the Jetpack: Jetpack 3.3.1 and Jetpack 3.3.2, but jetsonUtilities only prints 3.3.

After flashing the Jetson TX2 with the Jetpack 3.3.2 about the SDK manager (using the default system.img) and then flashing the Jetson TX2 with my backup .img, the Jetson TX2 is now booting. Then after a few seconds I get a kernel panic error:

What is going on there?

Is it possible to flash the kernel without flashing the image?

I figured out that the SDKManager 1.0.1 is using L4T 28.3.1, but on the Jetson TX2 I took the image from does have L4T 28.2.1, is this the source of the error? How can I select another version?

SDK Manager is just an addition or successor to JetPack. I don’t know the details, but so far as I know SDKM reuses most of JetPack, but adds some other features in support of newer L4T releases. SDKM became available starting with the L4T R32.x series.

If your original is R28.2.1, then the R28.3.x will probably have problems. The JetPack release which corresponds to R28.2.1 is JetPack3.3:

There might be things you can do to get an R28.2.1 image to work with R28.3.1, but if you are making this upgrade to get a newer CUDA release, then this won’t work. The CUDA release is tightly coupled to other dependencies in the operating system.

On the other hand, if you have a raw image clone, then you can loopback mount this and copy various content into a new R28.3.1 environment. Sparse images won’t work for this. You might want to add details of your use case and why you want to use an R28.2.1 rootfs clone with R28.3.1 flash software.

The requirements or availability of various kernel and device tree flashes changes depending on release, and I would have to look at a specific release and look closer at docs to give you a definite answer. In general though, the kernel Image file mostly just gets added to “/boot” (if your system boots and runs, then just copy the file and don’t worry about flashing and recovery mode).

There are places where device tree can be added to “/boot/dtb/”, or to a partition. If in a partition, then generally early boot stages need the tree, and the next stage actually inherits from the previous stage instead of loading directly from a file. Those earlier stages tend to make some edits to the tree before passing it on, and so it would depend on the particular part of the tree as to whether placing the content in “/boot/dtb/” would actually work.

Both of the above are complicated in cases where boot security is enabled. Even among releases this changes, but generally speaking, once signing became part of the boot, some methods stopped working without effort to sign. Again, this would require reading the docs to a particular release to know what works.

As far as flashing just a kernel goes, if it is just an Image file, then why not just copy to “/boot”? Then again, if you are using an initrd, then you have two places to update the kernel. If the initrd is part of signed boot content (and probably it is not, but you could do this if it is a partition and part of the pre-boot execution environment), then updating the kernel would also require signing (but an Image file in “/boot” would not require signing). It depends on which part of the boot is looking at the content.

The flash software works with multiple devices, and has evolved over a lot of releases (I have some Tegra 3 hardware here which used an R16.x release…and some of that content is still the same even now due to inheritance). Some of that content is leftover in the context of a particular hardware, or in the context of a particular release. The only way to know what you can truly do is to read the actual docs. If you don’t mind a risk of it not booting, e.g., you have a clone or you are just testing with no valuable content, then you can find out (probably faster than reading the docs) just by testing it. The best answer on this is read the docs for that release.

Btw, since the content other than kernel or rootfs is never used once boot completes, then the only reason you would avoid flashing it all would be to update in place where recovery mode and the micro-USB cannot be reached. There is hardly any flash time involved in updating those smaller partitions, and signing will be correct without having to manually sign anything. If your content is really valuable, then you need a clone anyway or you have a future disaster looking for a time to happen. If you have a clone in place, then you use the “-r” option to not regenerate the image, and flash time is faster (the “-r” implies you don’t generate a new image and use the image already there). If you are replacing a kernel, isn’t it easier to just copy “Image” to “/boot”? If you are adding a module, then isn’t it easier to just copy to the right location under “/lib/modules/$(uname -r)/kernel”?

I have not read the R28.x docs in some time, but just copying files tends to be easier in those releases, e.g., when device tree is named in extlinux.conf and no signing occurs.

Btw, you never need SDK Manager to flash. This is just a utility front end. If you are adding extra optional packages, then you need SDK Manager, but only after flash completes (newer releases can even skip this and use “apt-get” if you know what you want to add). It is the “driver package” and “sample rootfs” which are used for flash, where JetPack/SDKM downloads it and adds a GUI display. I run Fedora, and JetPack/SDKM won’t run on it, but unless I am dealing with an optional file I run flash.sh manually. It’s easier than SDKM in my opinion.

Now if you have a clone, then you don’t even need the sample rootfs.

Someone else may have better details for the R28.2.1 release, but even so, you would need to explain what use case you have which makes you want to use flash for a specific content instead of just copying files (or whatever you want to change relative to the official docs for that release).

I made anything work taking the snapshot and flashing it with the Jetpack version you posted. I wasn’t aware off that the version of the image goes in hand with the Jetpack version I flash the image with.

For me now it’s still interesting to understand the problem in more detail.

Yes, a certain rootfs (and other partition) size exists, and if non-default sizes exist, then you want to use the “-S size” to set this. This is a default TX2 flash on command line:
sudo ./flash.sh jetson-tx2 mmcblk0p1

For reference before explaining image sizes, a “raw” image and a “sparse” image flash and result in the same thing. A “raw” image though can be manipulated, examined, so on. A “sparse” image is much smaller (if not a full filesystem), and flashes faster, but has no difference in end partition size. A regular flash creates “Linux_for_Tegra/bootloader/system.img.raw” and “Linux_for_Tegra/bootloader/system.img”, where the sparse “.img” is created from the raw “.img.raw” is created. One could rename the “.img.raw” to “.img” and it would just take long to flash. The exact byte size of the raw image is used in custom partition size options after abbreviating for “MiB” or “GiB”. If defaults were used throughout, then specifying size does not matter.

If your “Linux_for_Tegra/bootloader/system.img.raw” size (or the raw clone used to create “Linux_for_Tegra/bootloader/system.img”) is exactly 30064771072 bytes, then the size, abbreviated, is either of:

  • 28672MiB (30064771072 divided twice by 1024).
  • 28GiB (30064771072 divided three times by 1024).

If I were to flash and specify this partition size, then either of these would work:

sudo ./flash.sh -S 28672MiB jetson-tx2 mmcblk0p1
sudo ./flash.sh -S 28GiB  jetson-tx2 mmcblk0p1

If your partition is already that size, then there is no need to specify, but any partition is a wrong size, then you risk either truncating an image or overwriting another partition. I’m not sure which would occur during a flash, possibly the flash would stop with a failure, possibly the flash would happily do the wrong thing.
