New DGX Spark Unresponsive / Bricked After Initial Setup and Mandatory Update

Hi everyone,

I’m facing a critical issue with a brand new DGX Spark and would appreciate any help.

During the initial setup wizard, I was forced to connect to the internet to download updates; there was no way to skip this step. After the installation completed, the system went to restart but never powered back on.

Now, the unit is completely unresponsive.

  • The power button does nothing (I’ve tried long and short repeated presses).

  • The monitor receives no signal (with type-c and HDMI), though I’ve confirmed the cable and monitor work.

  • There are no power or status indicator lights on the chassis at all, so I can’t tell its current state.

  • Strangely, the USB-C ports still seem to provide power.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a specific hard reset procedure for the DGX Spark that I’m missing?

I have a second DGX Spark, but I’m now hesitant to turn it on. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi,
The DGX Spark has an autoboot when connected to power feature. Can you unplug your Spark and plug it back in and see if there is any output on your monitor? Do not press the power button.
After you plug it back in, can you ping the spark using its hostname? spark-[hostname].local

Are you able to see any activity on the monitor after unplugging the Spark and plugging it back in again? If you are seeing the NVIDIA log and then a black screen, you should be able to use the recovery image to restore. You can try unplugging the monitors from the Spark and power and plugging them in again if needed.

You can put your hand near the exhaust vents in the back - you will feel the airflow if it’s on.
If the airflow is there, I’d try to long press the power button to turn it off, then turn it back on and spam press the Esc button on your keyboard repeatedly and see if you can get to the BIOS screen. Need to make sure HDMI is connected though.

Having said that, sometimes form over function goes just a bit too far. Yes, the device is absolutely gorgeous, but would it really hurt to have a power LED, maybe in the back? Or illuminate the green NVIDIA logo.

The front plate is some kind of metal foam and if you could feel the cold air being sucked in when the fans are running. Also, the two openings, one with the NVIDIA log, are actually air intakes too.

@umit01 Try removing the USB-C power cable and wait a few minutes for any residual power to drain. Plug the power cable while pressing ESC and if you get into UEFI firmware then your unit is OK. Do a system recovery.

I did a DGX-Spark setup today and there were no issues. The updates were downloaded and after several reboots, I noticed three, I was greeted by the Gnome login screen!

Not sure what mouse & keyboard are you using but avoid Bluetooth ones until you finish the setup and everything works.

I am facing the same issue. Tried all the above mentioned steps. Is there a solution for this?

Thank you for all your responses. To be honest, I tried to turn it on again a few hours later, and it turned on right away. I didn’t do anything.

A few days ago, I set up the second DGX Spark machine. After the update and installation, it restarted twice, and on the third attempt, I was able to access the desktop. So my advice to anyone setting it up is to absolutely not touch the computer until you can access the desktop.
