RMA Assistance for Multiple Jetson Orin NX units

Hello, I work for a small electronics company where we design devices with OTS components such as the Nvidia Jetson for use on our own carrier board. I have been tasked with starting the RMA process for the Jetson boards we have purchased.

Through our extensive troubleshooting process we have narrowed it down to the Jetson Orin NX hardware, as the rest of our devices function normally. During hardware assembly and testing, a handful of Jetsons began to fail in various ways. While troubleshooting them, they do not boot properly and some output specific error messages over UART, despite attempts to re-flash them with known good software.

All devices were tested and re-flashed on the same Jetson dev board.

Jetson #1: Does not appear to boot when given power, no UART output to diagnose with, and the fan does not initialize.

Jetson #2: During boot UART terminal displays “RAS Uncorrectable Error in CMU_CLOCKS, base=0xe003000:” and continually reboots.

Jetson #3: During boot UART terminal displays “Unhandled Exception in EL3.” then outputs a large list of register values. Does not proceed beyond that point.

The points that really matter and need to clarify first are what is the environment you are using to do these test here?

The most promising way to tell if the module requires RMA is put them on NV developer kit and full flash with latest Jetpack.

We don’t care much about the test result on a custom board for RMA situation. NV devkit test is needed.

As I mentioned, all of the troubleshooting tests were done using the NV devkit. We also use the devkit to re-flash all of our jetsons, but these 3 in particular will not do so anymore. The attempts to re-flash used the same OS build that compiles successfully on all of the rest, whereas these 3 now error out of the flashing process. The UART errors were obtained using the NV devkit as well while attempting a normal boot. Unfortunately our OS build does not work with the latest version of jetpack, but considering these jetsons were previously flashed, worked for a while, then suddenly stopped working, my team reached the conclusion that software is not a likely cause.
For reference however, we are using build r35.4.1

Which module cannot get flashed on NV devkit? All of them?

Have you tried rel-35.6 or 36.3?

Because I am asking you to test on NV devkit, there should not be any thing like “I can only use r35.4.1 because I need it for my board”. Your board does not matter in this topic and should not get mentioned. Please focus on flashing then with NV devkit first.

Providing the full flash log from host and UART.

Partial log does not provide much help. For example, the last time I saw “RAS Uncorrectable Error in CMU_CLOCKS” is because of voltage issue. I don’t really see much Devkit case has such log.

Correct, all 3 of the boards mentioned will not flash anymore like they used to when we first obtained them. The dev team told me they could not obtain drivers for peripherals that were compatible with the newer jetpack releases at the time we started development, which is why we stuck with 35.4.1 We also have ~20 other jetsons that have been flashed with the same exact build and run as expected with NV devkit, so it is difficult for them to believe that it is software related. I will try to obtain the full UART and flash logs for the devices if they allow me to.

Here are the UART logs for each device at boot time. These were obtained after attempting to flash jetpack 6 onto them, and they appear to be the same as before.

Still does not boot, and the SDK manager does not recognize it when installed into the nvidia dev kit while in flash mode. Unable to flash at all.

  2. How did this test conduct on your side? I mean how many carrier boards and modules do you have there?

  3. You told me you tried to flash jetpack6 to them but Jetson 3 log is still jetpack5.

These UART logs were obtained after attempting flashing with 6.1 downloaded through the SDK. They appear to be the same type of error as when it was our production build.

As I mentioned previously, we have over 20 other Jetson Orin NX modules, and several Nvidia devkits. All of our jetsons were flashed using the same devkit carrier, and all were successful except these 3.
